I took some recycling about 25 meters to my bins, wearing a fleece but didn't bother with a coat - it was bitter with cold and wind so when I got back in it felt so warm I had to check the temp, it was still 47. At least the slippers just arrived a day early.4

I'm worried about those in cold houses - as we get colder, so does our ability to process what's happening, so it's easy to slip into 'too cold' without knowing it. Mind you, having something like a hot water bottle or heated blanket, plenty of loose layers, hot food or drinks and any exercise you can manage - these all help counterbalance cold rooms to some extent. My new favourites are double pyjama trousers as well as lots of layers of tops, I was amazed how much warmer I am, even sitting at the computer.
And it's just started a fine snow here.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

The central heating will go on when it needs to... but that day hasn't arrived just yet this autumn for me - despite a minus 3C air frost last night and day temps creeping slowly to a high outside of just +5C today.
I'm perfectly comfortable indoors with layering, knee blankets and the temperature lift from winter sun shining through my south-facing living room windows.
Haven't yet resorted to a daytime hot water bottle to maintain comfort levels either. When we get a succession of cold, sunless days is when I'm likely to need to put the central heating on for a couple of hours in the morning to stay warm for the rest of the day.
There's no financial imperative to adopt such an austere approach to winter but having found it to be no great hardship for the past 8/9 years, I see little reason not to continue if my health and comfort aren't compromised.
I have pretty decent house insulation in a 1950s semi but no mould, damp or condensation issues resulting from my cooler than average approach.

Another one here benefitting from the winter sun - it’s 22 degrees here in the kitchen, the heating is off, it’s 4 degrees outside but was minus 2 last night. However it’s 13 degrees in the hallway which is the north facing side of the house - 15 in the living room, and the office is 10 degrees. So I am staying in the kitchen for now!!6

Most definitely on for the best part of the day. Right now where we are there's not a lot of difference in day time highs and night time lows (+2 and -3 today, +3 and -5 tomorrow) and a light covering of snow arrived last night that hasn't shifted despite having had some sun. Like others, we do all the usual things - extra layers of clothing, hot water bottles, throws etc - to keep heating bills as low as possible but if it needs to be on, then on it goes. A lot depends on individual circumstances - where in the country you are, type of property, age/health of occupants etc - it's each to their own.Be kind to others and to yourself too.5

I've cracked and put the heating on for an hour at half 6.
I have been out all day and left windows open to let moisture out and some fresher air in. When I got back thermostats were reading 8.9°, not that it bothers me that much but I can feel the difference, but it just needed budging in to double figures.

All I can say is we are supposed to be a first world country and we have members here living in sub 10c houses.

Sitting room fell to 8C this morning so decided to put the heating on for an hour to take the chill off - guess what? Heating doesn't work. Boiler fires up, little radiator picture comes on but absolutely no heat in the pipes or radiators. @Spies - you are quite right, but circumstances are forcing people to take radical measures. If the government took NHS guidelines seriously it would not allow a situation to develop that means it's acceptable for householders to even contemplate circumventing them: MSE Martin himself says heat the person rather than the space. No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.5 -
I can thoroughly recommend the heated ‘throws’ that are now available. My health means that I am at home now,and money is somewhat tighter. Therefore it’s heating on for a little while in the morning and during the day ( when I have to rest) ,my electric throw is wonderful! At 3p per hour, that is a good piece of kit. 😁 . Perfect back up if your main heating throws a wobbler.🤣5
