Is your heating ON or OFF?

Well (putting fear of one-up-man-ship-aside)we are sitting here in what can only be called Siberian conditions, actually we are frozen into blocks of ice,it's warmer in the freezer, but never fear we have our trusty fleeces and fingerless gloves to the ready and being from northern stock we are extremely hardy so we'll be ok.
Seriously, though we've either become hardened to our no heating zone or it's not that cold,we did'nt even have condensation on the windows this morning,so not complaining. My hubby was very warm this morning by the way,he went out at 7am with just a short sleeved shirt on.0 -
It hasn't gone off, I've had it on all night on 17 degrees and hope it remain warm in here all day without having to turn it up.
I don't know about this keeping it on all the time saves money. Last winter I had it on when it was cold, alright it might have been twice three times a day to warm it up but I'm worried i'll get a huge bill in for leaving it on constant.
You hear all these stories (well I do) telling me they have it on constant all year round but on low and it works out cheaper.
Whats the general consensus on this????Capital one was £1000.00 now £0.00:j
Barclaycard was £250.00 now £190. 00
Asda credit card was £500.00 now £0.00:j
Aim to be credit card free by December 2012... Mostly done0 -

I was wondering this too as we are desperately trying to reduce our gas costs and be more efficient. At the moment I have been switching it on when needed and turning it off when we are warm enough but should I be doing something else?0 -
Well, last night was definitely the coldest night we've had so far. Don't know what the temp of the house was, but it took a while to warm up once I got into bed. Had my son complaining this morning that he was really cold in the night, too. Definitely time to dig out the blankets.
I really wanted to hold out on heating for as long as possible, so that I could build up a bit of credit on the gas DD. But if it's the same this eveing, I think I'll have to give in and put it on for an hour.....Just hope this cold snap passes quickly and it warms up a bit, so that we can manage without heat again.0 -
Believe me if I was Italian I'd beg to be repatriated, so long as it's somewhere warm:rotfl:.
Ah Unity it is not that easy! I am going to Italy on 5th November for 10 days, but not to a particularly warm part, I am going to central Sardinia where my mum now lives, in the middle of the mountains, I wouldn't be surprised if I found snow when I get there, just my luck hehe.
London IS freezing! Last night DH was out with some work colleagues and he called me (sounding like he had had a few drinks  ) and said: "It's snowing here in Holborn!". It did not reach Greenwich - not that I noticed - but hey now I feel quite justified about having put the CH on
Annie123, please tell your son that I LOVED being called a middle-aged jam-maker, that's just what I am, but that unfortunately I gave in (weak Italian stock, see? I can't help it LOL) so I am sorry I let him down, the jam is on me when we have the London meet!
Re. oneupmanship, Julie, quite frankly if you find this thread boring, nobody is forcing you to come on and read it and criticise. On the other hand, let me make clear that you are of course very welcome if you just want to swap stories and banter with the rest of us. People here are a friendly and unpretentious bunch (at least this has been my experience).
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Its bloody freezing in our house - but I know part of that is cos we need the new carpet down! heating has been on for an hour or two each day since beginning of OCtober with thermostat set to 18-20 degrees.DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

I know Jackie, I was laughing. I was trying to think up one of those daft jokes like "when we were wee it got so cold that..." but its too early for me to think !
Mardatha, this reminded me of a conversation I had with my first husband (from somewhere North of Aberdeen) - he said (with the intent of making me feel sorry for him) that when he was wee he was so poor he had to walk to school barefoot and he had his first pair of shoes at age 12.
I was half horrified and half disbelieving and told him that I'd ask his mum if it was true (at which he quickly admitted that he was joking :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: ).

It's a small world DD lived in Greenwich until the spring of this year when she moved to closer to work at Canary Wharfe. I hope you enjoy your holiday and that the weather keeps fine - if cold.
Last night wasn't quite as cold as we expected up here in the North East, although a friend of a friend said it was snowing at Haggerston Castle (popular holiday resort). The forecast was for -1 overnight, but no sign of frost when we got up this morning, despite clear blue skies all around. I've been checking for the rest of the week and it's supposed to be getting warmer, so perhaps this is the end of the current cold snap.
Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

I quite agree with you Caterina,we usually spend Christmas in Austria and then drive down through Italy for a few days.It can get so very cold.Last year it was so cold I was actually in pain.I felt like my joints were seizing up and my face burned with the cold.I had never experienced such low temperatures and there was so much snow.So I guess they don't get it any better over there realy in winter.0 -
One-up-man-ship yet again. It's really boring! I posted about the heating requirements in the UK.
Should I tell you about the time my DH was posted in the Falkland Islands during the war, in the winter?
I edited this post because I realised I was doing a "one-up-man-ship". Who cares how cold anyone's husband is at work (other than his wife)? I like it when my hubby is warm - I wouldn't boast about him being cold.
Julie
Oh thank you Julie! I'm so pleased someone sees my freezing to near-death since my heating bills have increased by God knows how much in the last month as oneupmanship, make me feel sooo much better!
I shall continue to hold out until 1st (unless it snows here) regardless that it's so cold in my house my flannel doesn't even dry out between face washes  .
If you want to talk about Falklands I'll match you with how to live on an English pension any day.
Sorry all, I'll climb down from my soapbox and go off to my daughter who has invited me for a nice hot lunch in her nice warm house...I may not be back today..:rotfl:0
