My heating is on for an hr on a morning and for 2hrs in the evening for little uns bath time, but i've caved today n just put it back on. I cant believe how cold it is here. I live in an old victorian terrace and its mainly open plan. The front room is not too bad but still cold ish but the open plan kitchen diner (which also has stairs to bedrooms and frech doors in) is absoluty freezing. My little un insits on playing out there so our connecting door to front room is ofen open making whole house freezing. I'm currently sat with joggers on knee high socks and slipper socks on top, a vest, t-shirt and hoodie plus my fleecy blanket n laptop on my knees n i'm still frozen. Think i must be getting a cold cuz little un dosent seem too fussed.
Hope it doesnt get too much colder, think i'll have to get me self some thermals.£387.39/£196.46

Hi all!
We still do not have the main heating on, but if I was really cold I would, I am not into suffering...:rotfl: :rotfl: However, we are all wearing sweaters and using knee rugs and I find with the thick curtains drawn and the doors shut, if you have a couple of candles burning it can get really cosy.
In the bedroom we have one of those '2p an hour' heaters that just take the edge off the cold, and we put that on for two hours before bedtime. And of course we have now had to swap to the winter duvet, as it is considerably colder at night.
We made a pledge not to turn the heating on til November and it looks like we may well make it!

well after saying on this thread yesterday that we're quite lucky with the weather down here in the south I awoke this morning to a blanket of snow! Ha!
Been warm at work all day but will have to see what the house is like when i get home. Still hoping to hold off till November - though that being this weekend it's not so bad now!0 -
Still not put the heating on. OH spent last weekend putting the cling film on the windows and that had made a big difference to all the drafts and condensation, which was my bug bear. Have been lighting the stove though. Hoping to last longer than the first if possible.

Hi Diva. Is that one of those halogen heaters?0 -
I am almost ashamed to admit this...it may be half term and beyond cold but I refuse to turn the heating on during the day. I have parked DD off to her Aunt's much warmer house lol
I am making do with a couple of layers topped off with a jumper and then my dressing gown on to and finished off with faux fur rug over me! I would be lying though if I said I am not counting down till 6pmDEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0 -
Guys, the impression I am getting with some answers is that people are trying to out do each other regarding turning on their heating.
Please dont be miserable.
Heating is an essential. If people want to wear hats, gloves, 6 layers etc fine but please keep healthy. Also remember that rooms could get quite damp with no heating. The prices charged by British Gas et al are a disgrace but as I mentioned on another post - an elderly neighbour who sadly died recently never had his heating on. He also carried a light bulb from room to room as he wanted to save money. He rarely changed his clothes but when he passed away he left over £700k. Of course the absent relatives appeared to 'claim' their inheirtance but my point is some people choose to save their money but sometimes we need to spend some to have a reasonable quality of life.

The local news has just been on and it's expected to hit -3 tonight, the coldest October in 34 years! Thank goodness we are indoors.
What really made us stop and think though was an item on homeless people sleeping out in Newcastle. Especially those who sleep on top of graves because the stone is warmer than sleeping on the earth itself. There's something inherently scary about sleeping rough in a graveyard.
In addition of course was the fact that any blankets they use are only good for one night because condensation means they are soaked the next day and they don't get the chance to dry out.
It's a very sobering thought - DH and I both said it is terrifying to think of even having to sleep out for one night in conditions like this, never mind thinking an indefinite period.
I'm sitting here now feeling very, very privileged and grateful to have a roof over my head. Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

Well, last night was definitely the coldest night we've had so far. Don't know what the temp of the house was, but it took a while to warm up once I got into bed. Had my son complaining this morning that he was really cold in the night, too. Definitely time to dig out the blankets.
I really wanted to hold out on heating for as long as possible, so that I could build up a bit of credit on the gas DD. But if it's the same this eveing, I think I'll have to give in and put it on for an hour.....Just hope this cold snap passes quickly and it warms up a bit, so that we can manage without heat again.
Dont forget the tip I picked up from M.S.E. - ie to give a few blasts with a hairdryer at cold bedding and cold bits of one's body when getting into bed. Since ensuring I have a blanket underneath the bottom sheet and using a hairdryer as required I've been fine and dont miss electric blankets at all and rarely feel the need of a hotwater bottle. As regards putting extra bedding on the bed in cold weather - I leave the "full whack" of bedding on my bed all year and just chuck off any bits I dont need that night as soon as I've warmed up (works fine for me - though I sleep on my own and only put on a nightdress in very "dire straits").0 -

The consideration for me is more environmental than financial, but obviously I don't want the heating on unnecessarily anyway.
Funnily enough, if my workplace is at 20 degrees, I'm too cold, while if my flat is at 20 degrees, it's adequate
Same here....I'm now acclimatised to my home being at 20C - can sometimes even not notice too much if its at 18C - but my workplace still HAS to be 24C!;)0
