No idea what the weather is like in London as I'm in Sardinia trying to stretch that summer feeling.
Back on 11th Oct to a good stash of firewood so we're planning to start by lighting the stove in the living room and attempt our usual 1st November deadline before switching on the CH. Having said that, we're both older and have health issues. Cold and damp aggravate my arthritis. So we're keeping an open mind. If we had the CH before November, so be it.Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Our thermostat is set at 14 degrees, set to come on morning and evening for an hour each time. It clicked on the last three mornings which made it lovely to get up to, into a nice warm room. So far it hasn't come on in the evening but the time will soon come I'm sure. Once it starts getting frosty the thermostat will be turned up to 17 degrees and we will know that Winter is definitely coming. Now that we are in our late 60's we feel the cold more so prioritise heating in the budget.Sealed Pot Challenge #012

We're renting a prefab bungalow that runs off oil for the central heating. The central heating doesn't work properly, and the oil storage tank reeks like there's a small leak somewhere. We don't trust the system in this house, so we're not using it at all (we also can't really afford to stump up £500 every couple of months to stock up - plus, we're hoping to move out sooner rather than later and wouldn't get that investment back!).
There's an electric immersion heater for the hot water, and the shower is electric (instant hot water). We only put the immersion on if we want a bath - washing the dishes is done with the kettle instead.
This bungalow has an EPC rating of F, because it's a prefab and has single glazed windows. The landlord thought briefly about putting in a new boiler, but there is little point unless they also replace ALL of the (very large) windows because heat still just escapes out of them.
We have one of those portable oil filled radiators, running from a normal plug socket, and will probably get another one for deep winter. The living room has an open fire, but again so inefficient that we're not going to use it. The room is very large and most of the heat just goes right up the chimney.
This house is COLD. But, luckily, I'm an avid knitter and enjoy making jumpersOur electricity bill (no gas, no oil) is about £55/month so we're not overly bothered. Blankets, jumpers, socks - all we need!

It may not have been that sunny, but it has been uncharacteristically balmy over the past 36 hours. Long may it last.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

It's been pretty warm where we are too. My wife asked me to relight the boiler last week when the temperature dropped, which I did despite the forecast being for warmer weather and I think it's cut in only once since.0

So we're keeping an open mind. If we had the CH before November, so be it.
I do appreciate that for some people saving money is absolutely essential but although I enjoy the challenge of being mse:money:I draw the line at muffling myself up indoors. Yes, I'll wear socks and a jumper but I'm not wrapping myself up with hot waterbottles and someone said they put a 'blankey' (not sure if that was a typo or it had belonged to a child) over their knees.
Surely that's the whole point of central heating, so that the whole house can be warm and comfortable.
But just to repeat myself, I do understand that there are people out there who don't have a choice.0 -
I think there is also the problem of people who have to live in cold, north-facing homes which may also be damp and with structural problems. It may be unaffordable to fix right now or they may have a landlord doesn't live up to their responsibilities. My own mother was a devil in her old age by insisting in keeping the house like an ice-box so she could have her precious holiday abroad. Sheer madness in my opinion, and those genes have not been passed on to me!Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Well I’ve not long had a nest installed and I love it!!!
I can’t recommend it highly enough.
My heating is set to 15 degrees at 11pm and then 21 degrees at 6am.
Basically cool at night and warm all day & evening.
Then when I go out - nest knows I’m out by my phone location, it turns the heating onto eco - which is 13 degrees.
Obviously most of the day Monday to Friday, it will be turning itself off.0
