My sister was using those '50p Moisture Traps' (2 for £1 in Poundshops/B&M etc) in her caravan and was so surprised at the amount of moisture that they collected, that she started to use them around her home as well.
I've been using one in my porch (where my chest freezer is - with an engine running) and have to replace it every 6mths. I used to have my TD (Condenser type) in there, and was replacing it every 3mths back then. Got rid of the TD when it broke down and refuse point-blank to replace it :j. As I'm now drying clothes outdoors whenever possible - and on an airer when weather is bad - I've now got them behind the curtains in my living room and bedroom as well :j. Recently bought one (in B&M) that's refillable .................. so no unnecessary disposing of plastic each time :j. I'm sure that I can actually buy the 'refills' cheaply as well :T.
Benefit is that there's no running of electricity either :j.0 -
We have two dehumidifiers, both bought second hand for around £20 each. People who do up houses often use them to dry out the houses when they have been replastered. That's how we got both of ours.:hello:  please play nicely children !0

I have to say - still off! The thermostat is set to 16c now as I'm out of the house til 7pm with work this week. Temp indoors seems to be sticking around 17-18c. This despite a couple of really cold nights - 4c on Saturday when I was driving back from the pub (I'm teetotal, designated driver
).
As I walk 2 miles home from work, I'm usually pretty warm by the time I get in & putting the heating on for an hour isn't worth it when I do finally feel a chill watching telly. There's a fluffy blanket on the couch that does a great job!
Also still on the summer duvet, with a thin blanket over it & my cotton PJ's on & plenty warm enough.
The house roof is pretty well insulated so that must be doing its job.
I do still have my thermal curtain linings to buy & fit for the huge lounge window, so need to do that before proper winter arrives.0 -
Hi everyone
My heating is still off, although I did put it on a couple of weeks ago to test that it is still working. I always light a few candles at night to take the chill off (I bought stacks a couple of years ago on the cheap) and have a digital thermometer in the front room to make sure I don't let it get too cold. I also have blankets that have been knitted and crocheted over the last few years. My winter duvet is already on the bed and hot water bottles have been looked out but not used yet.
So Im ready I hope for when it gets colder. I also have lights on my fire that I sometimes light and kid myself its warmer!!!!!

The winter duvet was so much warmer and cosier last night. I had a good 6 hours without waking up.
I still feel quite cold now I'm out of bed. I'm not sure if I'm coming down with a cold or something as i felt a sinus headache yesterday.I bought a second hand dehumidifier earlier this year and decided to run it as an experiment downstairs in the living room. It has collected over three quarters of a pint of water already. It was on for about four hours last night and has been on about the same already today. There are no obvious signs of damp anywhere so I didn't expect it to collect so much so soon!
I have been reading that moist air makes you feel chilly and is harder to heat up than dry air. We thought we would try it out and I must say the house does feel more comfortable today than yesterday. It will be interesting to see how/if it helps in the long term.
That is interesting. I might see if I can find a second hand one.0 -

My dehumidifier cost me £60 second hand (should have been over £200) and has been running faithfully for 6 years now. Makes a big difference as we have an old house that's prone to damp.LBM 11/06/2010: DFD 30/04/2013Total repaid: £10,490.310 -
It's mostly off, but I've had to Override the OFF lately to just get a bit of warmth into the house. Normally I'll just wear a jumper but my parents were round and they are terrible for leaving doors open etc, so the place got very cold.0

Did turn my thermostat up to 18c last night. With all the rain we've had & the temp hovering around 16c/17c I can feel a bit of dampness creeping into the house. So it's been on for about 45mins this morning & an hour this evening.
It does click off after an hour, so not exactly hammering it.
Still got the summer duvet on, which with a thin blanket & PJ's is still plenty warm enough.
It does feel a bit strange running round closing all the curtains at 6pm as it's got dark....
I'm actually quite looking forward to winter this year, usually I hate it.0 -
Despite the last couple of days' heavy rain it hasnt been particular cold and our central heating has barely triggered so it's onky come on innthe morning tompeovide hot water for washing and heating bathroom radiator for drying towels.
Haven't needed to switch to the winter duvet yet either.0 -
It wasn't muggy today, but fairly mild I thought - unlike yesterday which was chilly!
So its mid-October and the heating remains off. Can I last another 17 days, I wonder?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
