This is going to sound very FWP, but having had such a lovely summer in a new and sun-filled home I am dreading turning the clocks back in 9 days time - to the extent I have been googling SAD lights. Has anyone had any experience of them? Any recommendations or confirmations that they are a waste of money?

I think Mooloo on the Relationships threads uses one, perhaps you could pm her.

  • I had a quick look at SAD lights as well. I'm not sure if I'll get one, but the constant darkness that's soon to arrive is filling me with dread. It's already dark by about 6.30pm in these parts & drawing in earlier every day, it seems.

I had to defrost the car windscreen this morning, definitely getting chillier outside, but the house temp seems to be holding up & the heating, when it clicks on, is usually off again 45mins later.
& I've still not succumbed to the winter duvet.
  • I was thinking about getting a light alarm clock. I have it on my A*azon wishlist.

The heating is still off here.

I don't get why people see being cold as a badge of honour. Some things are definitely worth paying for!

  • Well, my thermostat is set to turn the heating on if the temp on the thermostat drops below 16c (it's on a brick wall, so it's always about 2c lower than the room temps) & heating hasn't flicked on.

    Currently 18.5c in the lounge....
I've got fluffy socks on & a hot water bottle for my dodgy knees but it's actually just not cold in the house....
The sun has been shining in all day, tho.

It did come on this morning for 30mins.

We leave our heating permanently on all year.

We use a thermostat instead. Digital ones are fab as you can program them. We've had it kick in a couple of times this autumn.
  • It's been a really beautiful day here today but, as always, the minute the sun goes behind the rooftops, the temperature really drops quickly.

Still using the gas fire for around an hour each evening, but that's all at the moment as I'm changing into pj's/dressing gown as soon as we've finished our evening meal ;)!
  • I caved and turned it on last night. Or actually early this morning when I got in from a night out. It's been getting cold, and I just didn't want to force myself to live with it any more.

It's electric storage heating, so it'll stay on for the duration now, but it's nice in here at the moment. And it looks like it's going to get colder as the week goes on.
  • I've just put mine on "advance" to come on earlier than the timer at 4pm, & had to turn the thermostat up to get the boiler firing. I've some sheets drying off that I washed yesterday & need to get sorted before the load in the washer finishes.

I also did my meter reads a few days ago & I've used barely any gas & built up a bit of credit, so a couple of hours blast won't hurt.

I'm expecting the thermostat will click off after an hour anyway, so I'll give it another hour blast this evening.
The sun is shining on the back of the house (south facing, so always warm) so it's still not actually cold in the house.

I have my thermostat to come on if the temp drops below 18c in the lounge & it's actually stayed above that every day, thanks to the sun's free warmth!
It comes on in the morning, so the nights are definitely getting colder.
