Is your heating ON or OFF?

  • Temperature's starting to drop, but I'm adamant that neither the heating is going on nor is the winter clothing coming out until my week off mid-October. It's my workplace where I notice it most as the building faces a sea front breeze but at least my colleagues have stopped putting the damn air-con on now.
  • Beautiful sunny day in West Yorkshire, so ok so far, I have changed over to winter duvet though it was quite chilly last night.
There will be a big surge in power on 1st October that seems to be what we are waiting for!!
  • Took the chill off the house this morning, thermostat came on. Now have sent up over a ton of CO2 this year!
  • Yes switch mine on for a couple of ours before bed. Then leave it off during the night and most of the day. Keeping the boiler on all day, even if it's set to 18 or just used for washing up, is hot water only uses £1.20 a day in electricity.

Found that out with my new smart meter.

A good report about a smart meter, for once!

It's much cooler here now, still warm inside but the temperature is going to drop to 5°C overnight so I am wondering whether my chilli plant will survive. Perhaps I should have bought it in before dark?

I'm going to have an early night with my trusted HWB once I've finished my book - just another 100 paged to go!

  • CH is still off, but I have been giving the 1.5kw fan heater a 20 minutes blast in the mornings to warm my bedroom before I get up & again before I go to bed.

During the day it's been sunny & warm, & the lounge temp went from 17.7c to 18.3c from me sitting watching telly under a blanket. Never knew body heat could have such an effect, especially with the ridiculously high ceiling in there.

As I'm working til 8pm this week the heating will stay off. Have to see the week after how cold the evenings get... Need to find the hot water bottle.

I will be putting the winter duvet back on soon. It feels chilly so im wearing PJ's to bed & have a fleece blanket over the summer duvet.
  • Actually MM7 I do already have two summer kingsize ones which I can get in the washer one at a time. Thank you for the suggestion and I don't know why I never thought of it myself. I think this will be the way forward next year as the maintenance cost of the winter-weight one has really become too high.

Thats what i like about this thread everyone has different ways to manage things with 7 children it was a nightmare trying to keep on top of just the regular laundry without the bedding the other good thing about usind 2 duvets is that if they are seperate u can throw one off if u get too hot

I have to have 2 summer ones and sometimes a 7.5 or a
9 tog as well since finding out ive got fibromyalgia and athritis im either too cold or too hot ive plenty of single size in different togs I hang the thick ones up againt the door in winter to keep the cold out front and back door are upvc but the middle has polystyrine in and since these replaced wooden doors the hall and kitchen have been colder this was a big help will be doing it again soon im waiting for now because im still not moved and im hoping im moved befor it gets very cold

  • Well, it was decidedly chilly this morning when I went outside to empty the kitchen bin. Possibly even a little frosty. Gloves are out for the walk to work.
I'll be setting the heating to come on for an hour in the mornings this week if it stays like this. Finishing at 8pm means no need for it in the evening this week.

Also, I'd rather not let the fabric of the building cool down too much as that can lead to condensation & damp & take ages to heat up again. I noticed the kitchen window steamed up when I was boiling pasta for today's work lunch...

Indoor temps still between 16 downstairs & 18c upstairs. Really need to pull my finger out at the weekend & buy a cheap fleece to use as a door curtain on the front door & get some thick liners for the lounge curtains. Oh, & fix some insulation board in the cellar ceiling that's fell down.

If it stays like this, the heating will be on next week.
  • On, but mainly because we had major renovation work done over summer. This included a new heating system as last winter the boiler was on its last legs and struggled to get the house warm. So I wanted to test the heating and after being cold all last winter I want a bit more warmth this year! Plus we have no curtains yet and the flooring is only just going down (carpets last week, hard floors this week). The thermostat isn't set very high for now, but it has been kicking in more regularly over the last couple of days.
  • So much for the1st of November :( Have had to put the heating on as it is bitterly cold today :(
Extra jumpers only take me so far
