  • We have gas central heating, Its not on but as I have coal to use up the fire is being lit in the sitting room. Once the coal is used up we will replace the open fire with as electric one. It was cold this morning so It was lit after breakfast, we have small convector heater in the bed room which comes on just to warm the room before we go to bed. We still have the summer duvet on, but the quilt on the bed gets pulled up if its cold at night.

I was scalded when a hot water bottle burst so I am afraid we use an electric blanket to warm the bed.

I feel the cold quite badly, bad circulation despite my pacemaker.
  • I have given in this evening. I read the long-range weather forecasts about the dreadful snow we will have for four months apparently I my skin became numb quite soon after that. I had the heater on in the car when I was out and came back and my lodger, who hails from cold parts, mentioned that it was getting airy. It was enough for me, that an the fact that the washing didn't completely dry during the day. I have succumbed but will at least be comfortable.

I'm of the view that if I'm appropriately dressed (lots of layers) and still cold the heating goes on. It's going on tonight for a couple of hours as temperature is dropping like a stone. I've just ordered a pair of decent slipper boots that hopefully will help keep my feet cosy - I suffer from cold hands/feet due to medication side effects and last winter was a challenge to keep my tootsies warm. I still have the summer duvet on but have a fleecy blanket to pull on if I get chilly and my micro heat pad is well used! Unless the forecast says otherwise I'll change the 4.5 tog for a 10 tog in the next couple of days.
  • The heating has now been on for a couple of hours and I feel flushed and my skin feels dehydrated. It's only on at 16C, that is if the thermostat is right and the room temperature is 20C so I have had to turn it down. The last time I was cold was the early morning flight into Manchester from Cyprus in May. It was just 4C which after 2 weeks in the sun was a rude awakening. I fear we might be in for some more fairly soon.

We’ve had to put it on at the caravan now for an hour or so a day but hope to keep it off at home at least until October
One day I might be more organised...........

  • Believe me, I have tried to force the wretched thing into my extra large washer many times, but it just will not fit. It's a king size very light but bulky item and whilst the summer king size duvet will easily wash at home, the winter one is an absolute no-no. I could easily dry it at home as well but seeing as it has to be washed in an industrial machine, they can dry it as well. At £14 a go, the duvet is probably getting on for 20 years, I could have replaced several times over. Maybe next year.

Have u considered getting another summer one and join them together in winter i did this when my kid were little was much easier than trying to get winter ones dried in winter if anyone was ill or had accidents hth

It's usually at least the end of October before I put on heating and see no reason for that to change.I have been using a hot water bottle but still have the summer duvet or I wake up too hot in the night.
How I wish! I'm in a permanent state of coldness, so being too hot at night is unknown - even though I sleep under two 13.5 tog duvets!

I cheated somewhat yesterday - it was really miserable weather but we had a family day at my parent's house, and they turned the heating on. When I got home at night, my home was a pleasant temperature (a hangover from the warm weather) but I still made up a HWB for bed.

Hope is not a strategy :D...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!

Actually MM7 I do already have two summer kingsize ones which I can get in the washer one at a time. Thank you for the suggestion and I don't know why I never thought of it myself. I think this will be the way forward next year as the maintenance cost of the winter-weight one has really become too high.

Living proof, I did exactly this. I got a couple of metres of white tape from the haberdashery stall on the market and cut it into 16 lengths. Used a zig zag stitch on my sewing machine to sew a length on each corner and halfway along each side and top and bottom. This is long enough to tie into a bow so that I can separate them easily but having this many ties stops the two layers from shifting. It took less than an hour all told and was a lot cheaper than buying a new all seasons duvet
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
