Mines on all the time, turned up to 20 degrees when we are at home and down to 18 degrees when we are at work or in bed. It's on all year round, although it never kicks in unless it goes below 18 degrees. It works well for us and my combined gas and electric bill is £45 a month.....currently £229 in credit.Well Behaved women seldom make history

I do miss having a home with an open fire and wood burner. Although people have been saying wood has gone up because so many people are have them now.
Scavenging in skips and making hot drinks to the council workers when they trim our trees every year helps with the free wood stash. Untreated pallets also good for the purpose.
But it's true, at one time if you saw a tree was cut down in our area of London you could count on being able to get home, pick up the car and get your stash, now if you aren't already able to collect, it goes in a heartbeat, because so many people have stoves. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
It's freezing up here in Scotland! Yesterday it was on all day. Today it's been on for ages as well. Turned it off about 3 hours ago and in that time the house has gone from "toastie warm" to "warm enough, but will need turned on again later".
Hate this time of year!0 -
Mine is ON. and the timer is set. 20 minutes in the morning from 7am just to take the chill off. Then 6pm-9pm.
During the day there is a blanket on the sofa and hot water in the kettle.4/10/22One Year Mortgage Free Yay!

ours has been on for a while, as and when needed in the evenings. I live in a victorian end of terrace and it's flipping freezing when the heating is off. Today the heating was on for an hour mid morning to take the chill off. we were out most of the afternoon and when we got back at 6/6:30 it was 13 degrees..... took an hour and a half with the heating on full to get the living room to a comfortable 18 degrees.
Will be setting the timer this week I think, it's getting a bit too cold on a morning0 -
not been on yet - been fine just adding extra layers - just myself though so no other people in the house to moan about how cold they are
when it gets really cold (not now) its usually the hands & feet that start to be an issue for me first so I end up wearing usb heated gloves & boots when sitting for an extended period
I also use an electric blanket in bed on the lowest setting which is very cheap to run (60 watts max. on high setting IIRC so just like the cost of an old fashioned light bulb)
IMO you only really *need* the heating on if you are young, old or have health issues - maybe also if you have significant damp issues with the house itself
Im probably towards the end of the spectrum for not being bothered by the cold as I also take cold showers sometimes although thats usually in the warmer moths0 -
The heating may go on in our bedroom tonight, we usually don't use that heater, but a bit worried about mould so will probably have it on for a half hour or so each night.
I'm wearing my proper winter jumper today, feels lovely and cosy.:)0 -
Untreated pallets also good for the purpose.
I was out on the scrounge for a couple this morning 150 yards away but the builder said the owner wanted them to build a bed for a kid: it was an extra long pallet with nice wood, so I'm pleased at least it won't just be dumped.
Do not touch anything with MB markings as Methyl Bromide is nasty stuff to burn. Listen to the voice of experience and check your pallet or stone crate before you break it up!
Anyway, my fire has been on in the evenings but my gas CH hasn't. In fact my last year's bill for gas was £36, although if it's a cold winter or aged relatives visit I might spend more this year. People seem to be pleased if they only spend that a month on DD, so I'm happy enough and a bit fitter for the wood processing I do!0
