Apart from when we had a few frosty mornings our heating hasn't been set for regular times this year, we only put it on for a bit when we feel cold. I was very ill from January to just recently, and I had it on a lot then. In fact, I think the 4 weeks I was really ill we had it on more than the entire winter!
I don't think it's been on at all for about 4 weeks now, just have it on for a couple of hours to heat the water up. My neighbours is on all the time!

Ours comes on for an hour in the morning on the timer but it's off during the day; when we're moving around and doing things we're warm enough. Sometimes we put it on in the evening for an hour; for some reason our living room is the coldest room in the house (I hope no-one died in there ). I think it's to do with the position as we don't get any sun in there until late afternoon. We have a combi boiler so have hot water "on tap". Gas and leccy bills are currently £61pm and when our next annual review happens at the beginning of May we should be on track and not owing them or them owing us either. :)

  • From today mine is off!!
Just had my gas/electric bill come and it's £157! I live on my own so guess I've been overdoing it...

My timer is still switched on from 7-9 in the morning and 5-10 in the evening but if it's a warm sort of day as of late I just turn it down at the thermostat. Today is a little chillier as there's no sun so I will probably turn up the stat when it's due on later. We are getting all four seasons in a week at the moment and I doubt I will turn it off completely until late May. Life's too short to be cold.....

  • I've cut it down to an hour in the morning and 2 hours in the evening

It's a rare month in an even rarer year that it's switched off totally

However I've not lit the stove for over a week ( still need a blanket in the evenings )

And with posting that, have had to light the stove twice this week already

An hour morning and evening to heat the water but I turned the thermostate right down 2 wks ago so the heating has hardly come on at all, maybe a little on cold mornings I'm hoping my monthly direct debit is going to be reduced.

I had to switch ours back on as it was too cold at night! It's been lovely and sunny during the days however.

It's not as though we have to decommission our boilers, drain the system and make an absolute decision to turn it off, is it? I am thinking of the boiler room in The Shining when I write that. Surely most of us now have such flexible heating and hot water systems that we can change our minds to suit the weather, our health, the number of people in the house at the time, the cost of our bills relative to our income etc. I don't see there is any merit in having a heating on/heating off date written in stone if it means you are uncomfortable. That's not to say you shouldn't do all you can to minimise the need for constant heat though - an extra jumper and an electric blanket are useful things from time to time.

Anyone else feeling the chill this evening?

I'm sitting here with my HWB, but switching my heating on in the last week of April feels all kind of wrong.

  • Big coal fire on as snow showers up north today! Got oil fill a month ago but so far barely used it as now have a multi fuel (which I love!) I normally go through 3-4 oil fills a year, so am determined stove will suffice in evenings and 1-2 fills a year. I don't mind a bit of cold while stove heats up at all. Should save a fair bit
