Is your heating ON or OFF?

Hi all,
Firstly Apologies if this has already come up, for some reason my phone doesn't like the search function!!
We have just got back from holiday and have put the heating on. I wanted to put it on about 6 weeks ago but managed to hold off We live in a top floor flat in an old period property that is single glazed and bl00dy cold! I think a big factor is both of the flats below are currently empty (renovations and ours was ready first) and I'm hoping this may change soon as they're almost done. Anyway, my question is.. It better to have all heaters on with those in hallways etc turned down low or to have most of them off apart from those in the rooms most used?
At the moment we have the bedroom and living room hearing on and the rest (kitchen, hallway, bathroom and spare room) are all off. We obviously keep all the doors closed to keep heat in but it is poorly insulated so it takes a long time to warm up and even then it's not toasty! So I wondered whether having all the radiators on but low might be better than having two on high?
Second lot of apologies in case this is a stupid question!!0 -

I think this is a hotly debated topic, but i would say that it depends on lots of things like...the size of your house, how often you put the heating on, what temp you have it on etc.
I would advise an experiment. Maybe 1 week you leave them on low all the time, and then count how many KWs you used. Then the 2nd week you only put it on when you feel the need and again count the KWs used. Which ever uses less, is your answer.
Personally, i leave it off unless i need it on, but i live in a tiny 2 up 2 down terrace and it takes about 5 mins (normally less then that) to warm up the entire house!
Heating still off here, although it was on for 10 mins yesterday.0 -
Luckily I didn't need the heating on at all last week; it seemed to turn milder again!
We finally had a fire last night though and I must admit it was lovely to have the sitting room luxuriously warm.0 -
Mine's still not been on since it was turned off back in March. I'm hoping to keep going a bit longer without it, but I suspect I'll have to give in soon and put it on.0

Thank you! It really shouldn't take much to heat the place because it's a small 2 bed flat but the fact it's poorly insulated, period property and we're top floor with no one beneath seems to mean that's not the case! Will have to do some experimentation0 -
Theres a thread called getting ready for winter, it has lots of good ideas.0

Mine's still off - doesn't seem to be remotely cold enough yet.
I'm looking forward to switching it on however, as I have a new boiler and want to see how it performs (and mess with flow temps etc) ;-)0 -
Mine is still off.
I do have the dehumidifiers running though as the indoor weather station says the humidity level is 71% inside ...
Currently pulling 10 litres every two days just from the downstairs, and I don't dry my washing indoors, so that is not a contributing factor :eek:Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
..one size fits all... and nobody minds if you give it back.☆.。.:*・° Housework is so much easier without the clutter ☆.。.:*・°SPC No. 5180 -
Our is still off the temperature is 17.5 degrees in the lounge, if we don't get any sun today the house will feel cooler this evening. But hopefully not below 16 which is my rule of thumb otherwise I'll put the heating on for an hour at that point. All the doors are closed to keep an even keel with the temperature. Why pay full price when you may get it YS0
