have been reading this thread with interest! I lit the wood burner tonight, just a couple of logs to test it out before the really cold nights set in…….. well that's my excuse….. Like Fruball we are hoping to keep the heating bills to a minimum this winter.

off here - it's 18.5 degrees right now, and 17.5 in the morning when I get up so definitely no need yet, when the kids start protesting about getting out of bed in the mornings because "it's cold" rather than because they can't be bothered, then I'll put it on in the mornings, but it will have to drop a lot yet in the evenings before I put it on then - however, we all run warm so anything above 18 is a little uncomfortable.
    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)
  • Heating is on already. But I am in Scotland, plus I don't like to be cold!
  • Northampton -not used any heating yet but I must admit I did put the electric blanket on this morning when I got home from work (nightshift worker)

I have mine set to 18. It's kicked in a couple of mornings now but just for a very short while. I live in the North East.

Ohh long time since I've been on this thread (and the sneaky penny saving one, too :o). Hope everyone is ok and saving loads of dosh :)
I came home at around 20:30 last night and felt quite chilly. I was tempted to put a small heater on but resisted, making instead a large mug of piping hot tea, digging out leggings, socks and a fleece which I always have handy even in high summer, just in case. That warmed me up and kept me toasty till bed time.

I am absolutely determined to go through October without putting any heating on. I'll be changing my wardrobe around by putting out autumn/winter clothes and putting away the summer ones bar very few in case we have some hot days yet.

A tip from me, for the very cold weather: put a wad of newspapers under your feet when you are sitting at the computer, watching TV etc and a hot water bottle on it to rest your feet on. I find that when my feet are well warm the rest of my body follows. Put 1/4 teaspoon of salt in the hot water and it'll keep hot for much longer. A flask with a hot drink by you completes the set and it all works a treat.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • Ah, this interesting thread again, noticing the first signs of cold morning and evening air made me decide to check it out.

Needless to say I have not even thought about heating yet, and am still in a t-shirt, I will be slowly acclimatising myself to the cold as it gets colder (rather than wrapping up more now, so that when it gets really cold I have no tolerance to cold built up).

I do hope it is a mild winter like last year, for everyone's health and money saving sake.
  • Had the chimney swept and checked yesterday, so the stove is ready to go, but I will not light it until it gets really really cold, hopefully until November if the forecast is to be believed.
Until then it is cardis, hot water bottles and a blanket on the bed.
The boiler is being serviced on Tuesday so it will be ready as well.
The forecast for this winter is very cold

I want to hold off using the expensive gas until it drops below freezing, up until then it will be the stove, which takes the chill off of the whole house and I prefer the heat it gives off anyway.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I usually shower in the morning while I'm still warm from bed but I put the ch on briefly this evening as I had a shower and did a self tan. Have to wait til it's dry before I can put clothes on - fortunately I live on my own cos it aint pretty! (Sorry if tmi :p) and refused to sit freezing for half an hour.
