Not had central heating on once yet since last February! We live in the sticks and are a slave to heating oil, no MORE! It is just too expensive and does not last long enough end of!

Went out collecting logs the other day for the open fire, had them drying out in the garage for a couple of days so going to light the fire later, had a couple of bags of coal and a couple of nets of logs over Christmas but apart from that, the electric fire goes on for 10 minutes here and there and that is the lot. We all have 2 quilts on our beds which is great and has helped loads with overnight warmness.

Hoping to have some underfloor heating installed this year along with a multi fuel burner that I am gong to "tap into" the central heating ring with, but as a poster has already said not so cold here, average daily temp of around 6-8 degrees, no frost whatsoever :)

  • I am using my electric heater, a quick ten minute blast warms my living room, and then its thermostat thinggy just blows out for a few minutes every now and then.

I blew some warm air into the bathroom when I was having my first shower this year lol...

And also gave the bedroom a blast when I needed to do a bit of work at the PC in the corner (usually use laptop in living room unless printing stuff)

According to my bill predictor the electric fan heater is costing way less than firing up the central heating even for a few hours, so will stick with that. I get the living room to a toasty 18C within minutes, whereas it would take the radiator several hours to warm it to that and never get any higher (while the heater can get it up to 23 if left on, but that is way too warm for me!)

The expert reports I have read say it is better to heat the whole house as even if one room is warm, you will still have to go to a cold bathroom. I say big deal to that, if I want to spend a penny I'd rather it not cost £5 just so I can be warm doing it :rotfl:

On all day today, can't seem to get warm - perhaps because I went into the garden in the rain early this morning to move some pots out of puddles and onto slightly raised ground so they wouldn't get waterlogged. Heating, thermal, laptop and dog trying to get me warm

Have had to change all heating timers as boiler was making a very loud horrid sound..!!. So, am trying out a different way of using it (putting all rads on but at a lower temp) and only have it on when i'm in as a bit paranoid about it until I work out if it was just an air blip and not the pump about to burn out.

It means house is cold when I get in, but is the way I need to do it for now for peace of mind.

No further horrific noises since yesterday, so fingers crossed whatever was wrong is now ok...or i'll be stuck with one fan heater.

It's on now, but still not very warm yet.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

For the past 5 1/2 years we lived in a house which was damp and draughty. We had the heating on low all day and night just to keep the chill off (we definitely weren't warm). In October we moved to a new house (inherited some money so we could buy our own place :j) and I just assumed it would be the same. We had to get rid of a Stanley oil-fired range which I found inefficient, and had a condensing boiler put in. We just assumed we'd have to do the same with the heating, but not at all. The heating comes on in the morning, and again in the evening and we're not cold at all. We've barely used any oil, so I'm hoping our oil bill will come down (currently paying £110 a month ) This is despite not having any curtains in our lounge at the moment (we haven't decided on a colour scheme yet, and it looks like the previous owners never had curtains as there are no rails and no evidence that any were ever up)

Also we have a hot water cylinder, whereas in the old house the boiler would fire up to heat water when we turned on the tap. The hot water comes on the same as the heating and we're never short of hot water.
  • I've hardly had the heating on so far since Christmas. Living alone I am being more budget aware of the cost, so spend most of my time in my dressing gown to keep warm, with the hood up! :)
