Same question if I have to buy a new one - how much of the cost can I put on my self employed expenses?
You can claim the full repair costs if you can justify them. Capital Allowances are currently 100% for asset expenditure below £100k so you can claim the laptop cost in full as well if it's "wholly and exclusively" for business purposes. If you can say that the personal element is incidental then it's fully deductible.
Best way just look at your usage, personally I'd claim the lot as I never get time to use my laptop for anything else but MSing but you may be different. Really tax is about as clear as mud sometimes but hope this helps.0 -

Also, if anyones been doing any DUK or shooting stars etc recently did you see any good deals on laptops about?
Thanks

Wish I could afford one! I'd be living on Gap meals if I got one of those as I wouldn't be able to afford groceries. Until they sack me of course.
Although having said that i'm not sure they'd have the capacity to run the programs I use. I've been told to steer clear of netbooks since they wouldn't be able to run microsoft office (Which I would need) so not sure how an Ipad would compare with that really.0 -

I know .. the 64gB one with Wi-fi is £700 and I really can't justify that!
I've got a Netbook - hubby bought it for Xmas for me last year to help with MS-ing, and I've got MS Office 2007 on it, and it works perfectly!

iPads do run office, but a slightly different version.
I took an iPad with excel to an audit I had to do where the form to fill in was in excel. When I imported the form it didn't quite translate properly and lost some of the formatting. After I filled it in and sent it back to the computer it didn't look like the same form. So it was kinda wasted, but at the same time it was easy to use.
I could see that the word documents would be alright to use, but again I don't think you'd be able to complete every single online report using it.
If it would do all of that, then I would definitely have bought one by now!0 -

I use my netbook soley for ms and find it runs Office just fine too - it's not too happy if I try to run more than two or three programs at once but for updating my spreadsheets, and inputting reports online it works perfectly. It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

A recent mystery shop had smartphones for a £30 monthly contract and the all singing and dancing new model was £99 upfront, so this might be the way to go and cheaper than repairing the laptop presumably0

That is very handy to know, might save me a few pennies if I can just get a netbook instead of an all singing all dancing laptop.
Thanks ladies. x0 -

This is the case for my iphone...I love it. Although it isn't possible to input results on all of the sites. Retail Eyes for example use funny boxes within the windows that the last time I checked it didn't like it.
However the bonus is that I can use my phone as a dongle for my laptop. So I can use the inclusive data in my contract to surf the net on my macbook with no need for wifi or a separate dongle.0
