  • Thanks LP, I had a look on that site and there are some great bits for their room, we still haven't finished the planning stage, I'm currently getting ear-ache over the colour of the carpet, for anyone not interested in checking back in this diary it is 'slap-you-in-the-face' pink. I'm pretty sure I could get away with anything as long as I change the carpet.

Again I don't have much of an update, no OPs yet, although I have created a rather nifty spreadsheet to calculate how much money I'm 'going to' save and how much I need to pay off to clear it by 40, I just need to find the money now! My planned token overpayment of £5 in Jan, just to see how it all works and get everything set up, will save me £33.65 in the end. If I can scrape together £81 quid I can save myself a whole payment at the end! Thats actually quite motivating... I might have to make that a monthly target, shave at least 1 payment off a month... ohh if anyone wants the spreadsheet I can send it, I'll make it pretty and highlight anything that needs to be changed.

  • I hope everyone had a lovely crimbo, I cooked dinner, it went well, I'm told the turkey was lovely, being veggie I didn't have any, one thing I have found out, range cookers are so much easier to fit everything in, if I don't stay in the house forever then where ever I go I'm having a range, I'm not going back!

I fell off the frugal wagon, I brought a large TV, it was in the sale, it came in under the budget I quickly set while shopping, err... yeah I know not really how its supposed to work!:o

I have become slightly obsessed with money and my mortgage, I need to pay off all the silly little things and organise everything much better, before I go back to work after xmas I will have done this! I will!!!

Glad you're settling in and getting the essential furnishings ;), how are the boys doing?
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • The boys are ok, thanks for asking. DS1 is getting over manflu, he's 6 and he gets manflu, he's not even sposed to know that exists! DS2 is currently waving his harry potter wand and turning everything into frogs, or some such...:D

I've been trying to work out what my new years resolutions should be, what challenges I'm going to set myself...
    • OP target: £4000, thats £334 a month not entirely doable but not far off. Must remember to sign up for the 2011 thread
    • Keep to £150 grocery budget a month, this might need to be revised but should be possible
    • List everything that needs to be done to the house and gardens, prioritise then get the first third done
    • Get a new job, more interesting, better paid would be good
Thats my current list but I will need to add more, actually try to do some of these things, but having written them down doesn't look like much...

Just have to wait for a decent length of time til I'm fully covered then complain to BG that a couple of the radiators aren't hot and they will replace them and flush my system at the same time. I really am going to get full use of the homecare stuff.

    Hi Georgie

Have you got BG to flush your system yet? If you've still got a problem with certain radiators staying cold, have you tried bleeding them? It's very easy. There's a special key you can get, but I just do mine with a screwdriver.

Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Thanks, I think they were all blead/bleeded when the BG blokie came out. The boiler is on its last legs, I know this, I wasn't sure that it could be repaired but it just doesn't seem to register any kind of heat, none of the radiators get hot, the best I get is lukewarm... even when its set on 30!

I know I have a couple of rads that couldn't be bled so will need replacements but I just want a warm house!!! Sorry gone into full rant mode...

  • Still no closer to making an overpayment! It's January and like the rest of the population its a long month... I've always had savings so Jan has always been fine, if I slightly overspent, I had savings, I just made sure that I paid myself back. This year is different, I feel like everyone else!, one paycheck away from bankrupsy (sp?)... I have £100 to last until the end of the month, more than doable but not what I was planning, I wanted to make a payment to reduce my term by a month thats about £80! ok I think I should be relegated to a rants thread **Thats an idea I might set one up**

I'm just annoyed, I played host to my sisters friends this weekend and my house looks like a tip.

On a better note my boys have started to seriously look into what they could do in their room, lots of 'research' on the internet mostly comprising of playing the dr who game to see if they can get 'inspiration' - research and inspiration were used by my eldest, I think he may be too clever for his own good:eek:! We also started talking about the porch, its a total enclosed kind of shed attached to the front of the house, it looks a little better than that description sounds but I think they might want that for their den.

    Sorry for the rant

  • I've been away too long, sorry...

I have been around just been one of the huggys not really on this forum, I have nothing to post, no OPs yet, no where near...

OK OK, who knew owning a house was so expensive!! I have bills coming out of my ears and if the rates go up what am I going to do then, I budgeted for rates at 2% but I seem to be using all that money for stuff!

Right, need to budget properly, need to stop thinking I need more stuff, and need to phone 'people' to sort stuff out.

OK to motivate me know I'm back at work (had a week off, did nothing, v lovely but not really useful) I need a to ring list , so here goes...
    1. Sky - have no dial tone on landline so no internet
    2. BG customer services - get my money back for the twice paying malarky
    3. BG metering - to get my ecomomy 7 meter changed, maybe, need to figure out if I work it will it be cheaper
    4. BG homecare - 2 new rads and see if they can get more heat out of the system without me spending 1k!
    5. AW - should have had a water meter fitted before crimbo but then the snow came and it was called off, now they haven't re-arranged and I want one!
That should be enough, because of the first on the list this will all have to be done during lunchtimes...

I have been putting these off for a few weeks so now I've posted I have to do it!

    Kid update:
DS1 is training to become masterchef champ! Made honeycomb yesterday, not perfect but not bad!
DS2 is having issues! Not sure why but he is getting aggressive again so will have to watch that!

Nothing has happened on decorating front, ah well!

It gets easier GeorgieFTB I swear, since buying our place, we have had 2 floods - 1 in the kitchen and 1 on all 3 floors. The plumber disconnected the waste from the toilet on the 3rd floor and didnt put it back, so we had water running down the insides of our walls all night (3 rooms flooded with brand new carpets and walls all stained). Our boiler failed on us so had to have it serviced and parts replaced - leaving us with no heating or hot water over Xmas... I tell you, cold baths every single day (ice cold) during the winter, is like torture haha. The guy who fitted our granite sink dropped it and it shattered into pieces (damaging our brand new oak floor in the process).

I could go on, but I can say that we are all sorted now, house is all sorted and we are really enjoying it - these problems seem like the end of the world at the time but really it all gets sorted in the end :). Enjoyed reading your rules, they sound like pretty good ones to stick by. Hope you enjoy your Mortgage free journey.
