GeorgieFTB is finally here! Ohh... its gonna be a long slog!

OK, this is the start of my journey, ohh get me I sound like I should be on reality TV...

A bit of background first... I'm a 28 year old data monkey on a reasonable wage, single, with two kids I've kind of inherited (long story probably not worth going into now)

I'm about three weeks off completing on a repossessed house. My mortgage will be 108,995, this is a scary amount for me, I still don't like it even after weeks of getting used to it!

The reason I'm writing this is so somewhere, somehow, even if its just in the ether I'm doing this, trying to be mortgage free. If I just pay the amount I'm told to I will finish paying this thing when I'm 63 in 2045. I have no intention of that happening!

As its a repo I've gone with the broker, it needs to be done quickly, this is the least hassle way, I know not that MSE but I need my first purchase to go well... so it is a 2 year tracker and I can only pay 10% each year, that's still quite a whack, more than I'm going to have to pay anyway.

So down to business... my aims

1. To be MF by 40!
Its not that realistic but I need something to stretch me, an overall aim that will keep me spured on...

2. When I come to remortgage in 2012 to be down to 5 figures, eg under 100k
I need something a bit more short term to keep me focused.

So, first post, a bit rambley, spelling a bit off in places but needed to be done, for my sanity alone, according to the mortgage calc I'm only paying off a grand a year but I'm paying 600+ a month.

I know this is going to sound a bit off... but it's kinda how I feel, I don't really care if nobody reads this, I just need to feel like I'm in control again so telling my laptop this, pouring my heart to a keyboard, how 20th century, has made me feel better, thank you anyone that reads this and thank you MSE for making me think I could do this...

The story will continue... (in about 4 weeks when I have moved in)

  • Just wanted to say good luck Georgie! Serial lurker here, not yet started a diary cos I need to clear my debt first. I am in exactly the same position as you, 28 with a mortgage due to finish in 2045, so will be watching with interest. Hope I can join you soon. Off to susbscribe to the thread!
  • Very good luck to you. I really enjoy squirrelling away the pennies whilst still having lots of fun. And looking forward to even more fun when I am MF. I hope you have a great time on your MF journey too.

  • OK, it turns out I do care, I just logged on to "check what was going on" - lie!!! So thank you for all your replies, its nice to know I'm not alone.

A couple of you have asked about the kids, I didn't mean to be cryptic, it's just not a normal situation.

Four years ago my two nephews came to live with me and my mother and two and a half years ago we got a joint residency order. There was 'some unplesantness' that lead up to it, nothing could be proven for any kind of court case but it was 'felt' that they should stay with us.

That's about the level of detail I'm willing to part with on a public forum, I'm not ashamed but anything more runs contrary to my rules, rule number 6: never write anything on the tinternets that you wouldn't want your mum/OH/employer* (delete as applicable) to read, rule number 10: don't talk trash about other people's mothers/fathers/brothers/sisters, you can talk trash about your own but it just looks cheap!

The current plan is to complete on the house but leave the kids in their school for the rest of this academic year and living with my mum during the week til next summer, can't tell you how much I don't like this part of the plan I will miss them too much, then they move to mine as DS1 (its just easier to stick convention) will need to change school and the school near mine is much better. Its the first part of this plan I like the least, I'm going to have to be over at my mums most nights, I'm not sure what I would do if I wasn't putting them to bed.:o

aaa gotcha now. I had a weird vision of having stepchildren who had lost one parent then losing yur partner hence you being single and inherting kids. I tend to be a bit over dramatic :)

  • Hello Georgie - best of luck on your journey... My mortgage was about the same size as yours when I took it on and it scared me. Then I told myself that in the overall scheme of things, it was less than a lot of other people's and just knuckled down and started chipping away at it. You're only 28 (lucky you!!) and as the average age that people can access the property market is going up and up, you're already doing well!
