Just spoken to someone from BT Wholesale on 0800 1690934 who said the ceases will go through at 7.30pm this evening.
He didn't recommend speaking to a new BB provider until tomorrow as some systems only update/refresh overnight.

The new ISP won't be able to place their order with BTWholesale until your line is clear
what a pity BTWholesale are leaving it so late to process the cease orders.
It might have been better to have left it until Monday, assuming the contract allowed it.
Anyway, practically what that means is that most ISPs (if not all) won't be placing any orders with BTWholesale until Monday morning.
You can keep track of any orders on your line by these line checkers (best to use as many as possible, so they agree)
as well as the one you already have:-
http://www.btwholesale.com/getbroadband
there are others:-
http://www.prodigynet.co.uk/menu.php?page=support/adsllinecheck
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php
They will tell you if any open orders have been placed on the line (e.g. cease order etc)
Also go to the
BT login page and view any orders against your line
(for the above, if you haven’t already signed up to a BT online account, then it might be worth registering!)
Good Luck everyone0 -

GuessWho you mentioned earlier in this thread that it would be a good idea to go with an ISP as opposed to a VISP. I wondered how you can find out which is which. Is it a 'sign' that someone is an ISP if they can check line status such as those you have mentioned above - does that imply they are more likely to be an ISP?
Sorry if this seems a silly question but I have not been able to find out who is who and I looked at Prodigy Network as a possible alternative ISP to sign up with along with EFH Broadband as I know where their office is so I can go and yell at them if everything goes wrong againand your suggestion of NewNet but it is all getting very confusing. I would appreciate help. Thanks

I have already signed with New Net all is in place and they will keep trying until my line is active again. I have paid the connection thirtyfive pounds and first month £12.95, although they said that would not start until my line is connected to them, they were very efficient. I got an e mail with an attachment of my invoice, my computer would not open it, so I sent an e mail and said can you put it in the body of the e mail as I did not want to change my computer settings, very quickly they did so, I do not know what I would have done without Guess Who, but in case he is not about at this point, apparently a visp buys the broadband from someone else (ie V21 and Biscit)like a middle man, NewNet is an isp, they do their own with BT.Somewhere on this thread Guess Who explained it all to me. That is why I am sticking with an ISP, there do not seem to be many. They are answerable to themselves, so what happened to me with V21 could not happen with NewNet.
Hope this helps until Guess Who puts you right. Cheers oap0 -
Hi oap, I got the drift of what GuessWho was saying in his post to you but I couldn't find out how you identify who is an ISP and who is a VISP easily so I could just try and compare ISP's. The interesting 'conversation' between the two of you has helped no end as has your information on your own dealings with NewNet. I may well go with NewNet.
I'm just a bit wary of all of them at the moment though I must say that after being with v21 for more than 5 years it is only since Biscit took them over I have had any problems and I don't like the look of their new contracts at all.0 -
I agree with you absolutely Lotstolearn. My experience was v similar v21 were fine in terms of performance and customer service, although since 15th Nov I have discovered they have been taking more from my CC than they should have.
I'm going for Newnet: I quizzed the bloke there (Chris the sales team leader), and he said there weren't any intermediaries (e.g Netservices) so the fiasco we had cannot happen with them.
My newnet order is supposed to start on Monday after the "cease" has gone through. Chris said 7 days or with a bit of luck, sooner.
Because I rely on the internet for my work this whole episode has caused me a lot of grief.0 -
We may go off any minute!!! Yes I spoke with Chris the team leader, very helpful, also one or two ladies since, also very helpful, one even remembered me as I had recommended this website which she had not heard of.
I do not know how you find out who are isp on the list of providers, there only seemed to be NewNet, except of course for BT, I took the advice of Guess Who , he is with them, and you cannot beat a recommend. I signed up with a form, as I thought I would have no e mail address, they replied immediately with all the info on e mail. They sent the form by return of post too.
Regards oap
I keep thinking this is the last post
maybe???0 -
ps I asked NewNet if I wanted to leave, what was the cost, none, just a months notice, so that has to be a good thing. I will not want to leave if the service is as good as it seems0
