    Hiya everyone :hello:

Just in from work, the washer's on and I'll be hoovering after I've finished my strawberry jam sandwich :D

Mr troo rang, he's got a carpet for the kitchen :T

I've been having a think, how OS are we really? I mean, we make our own bread - but in a breadmaker not the oven. We make our own yogurt - but in a yogurt maker not a flask. We're trying to cut down on gas and leccy usage (I do love that thread :D ) but that's not OS, it's just moneysaving - which is cancelled out by using gadgets instead of doing things proper OS. I've used up the soda crystals and won't be buying more, I mix water, bleach and washing-up liquid in a spray bottle to clean the kitchen and bathroom because it works better. And I buy  granary bread because it's just sooooooooo much nicer than anything the breadmaker can churn out.

You're not going to kick me off this board are you? :rotfl:

Perhaps you should remarket it as "Old Style With A Modern Twist". I don't think any of us would particularly wish to return to some of the old style ways eg spending a whole day washing. There you are....all are welcome on the Old Style board no matter how we put our OS ways in place!

I grow veg and fruit but to be honest I think that's the only truly OS thing I do. I just don't think I'm being OS when I use gadgets  Im going to buy loaf tins I think, that way I'll save even more leccy because the bread can bake at the same time as tea is cooking and cakes are baking :D

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

morning folks - and happy halloween!

:grouphugs: to those who need them.. esp penny pincher... :grouphugs:

had another wierd pregnancy dream last night. this time i was giving birth!!! *very* strange - i was giving birth in a hospital corridor, and it was really run down, the pillow was coming apart and was stuffed with hay - i know the NHS is bad but i don't think its this bad! It was so real though, even down to the nurse checking to see how much i'd dilated, i remember asking her how many fingers i'd gone, and doing the whole back rubbing/walking around thing to ease labour pains - when OH woke me up i found i was in the exact same position in bed that i'd been in my dream - foetal, my hand on my lower tummy. *very* strange.

plans for today: its OH's birthday tomorrow and i promised to do something special for his dinner, and as he's a carnivore, that means something like a steak (which he doesn't get very often), or if i can find it, something special like venison. not very OS but its once a year! i've already got his pressie though. got to get some pritt stick for xmas card making too.

Apart from that, dinner tonight is pasta with pesto and veg... more xmas pressie making stuff (its all that occupies my time these days, or that's how it feels), making the xmas cake tomorrow i think, it has to cook for 5 hours so it'll help warm up the house, then bread in the evening. With the cold snap for the next few days OH is thinking we may need to turn the heating on, i'm hoping we can last out till midnight without.. i am so determined to get to November without turning it on! will see, though. Its scheduled to go down to -2 locally in a couple of nights so it may well be turned on then, if a lil low, just to keep the worst of the cold off.

troo - i handmake all my bread, with the exception of the odd loaf of multigrain from tescos if i'm feeling lazy. I've a couple of loaf tins that i inherited from my grandfather, who made bread every couple of days, after he retired, until he died. OH positively sulks when i buy bread from tescos these days, he loves my HM bread so much, and to be honest, i'm at the stage now where i can knock up some dough in 15 minutes, cover it and go out for a couple hours while it rises, or go do some sewing or something, then go back, peek at it, if its doubled, knock it back and knead some more, then pop into the greased tins and leave it till its doubled again. (granted though, i don't work. - if you do, you could do what grandpa used to do which was to make the bread up the night before, leave to double in an airing cupboard overnight, get up early (he got up at the crack of dawn), knock back, leave for another hour, then bake. you could reverse that by making up the dough in the morning before going to work, leaving to rise during the day, knock back when you get home, leave for another hour and then bake.)

i get 2 loaves out of 2 pounds of flour (although i use a white/stoneground/bran/seeded mix that i make up myself) and they generally last a couple of days, unless we have something like bacon and eggs for breakfast with soup or stew for dinner - those two will demolish a whole loaf easily between them. the other plus, at least for me, is that the heat from the oven is released into the house, and after cooking, i open the door to let the rest of the heat escape - you can really feel the difference between nights when i've done this, and nights when i haven't, lately. Anyway, go for it, hon, the feeling of producing your own bread is amazing - and i think its better than a breadmaker!

right, i've nearly finished my breakfast (apple, raisins and cinnamon with porridge) so i'm gonna get going.

hope everyone has a good day!

    Oooooh I've just found 2 loaf tins :j They're only small ones but it's a start :D

Kethry, I'm definitely going to bake bread 'properly', the only bread I like from the breadmaker is white loaves and I don't eat much white cos it makes me bloated and sleepy lol.

Afternoon everyone - hope everyone is fit and well

I survived my second day at work. Got stuck in with the calls, so some of the system doesn't scare me now. But still got a long way to go of learning things. As with all new jobs

On my 3rd load of washing now. Trying to play catch up after the weekend away. That will teach me to have time out for me and OH.

DS & DD, both at cubs and scouts later, so not really doing great deal for Halloween. Chippy night on Tues, cos of the mad rush.

Just about to start ironing uniforms for work/school 2mr.

    Nothing really exciting
    ((((((to everyone))))))
    Lots of love
