Black treacle goes out of date? Well, I guess everything has a use by or best before date now, but I've been using the same tin since forever and it seems fine.0

I make treacle toffee occasionally, its lovely. My cousins mum used to make it and always saved me some.
Have had two tins in for years and its still fine - one open and one not.
Also use it in malt loaf and expect you could use some in treacle tart instead of all golden syrup and you can add it to flap jacks or put a spoonful or two into a rich fruit cake.MARCH £62.38/2500 -

I would wait until September and then add it to Christmas cake for depth....not too much though, you don't want a bitter cake.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

My favourite treacle using recipe
1 and a half cups of SR flour
( I add half a teasp of baking powder)
1 cup of caster sugar
4 to 6oz of dried fruit (sultanas, currants, mixed peel)
1 large or 2 small eggs beaten
1 generous tblsp of black treacle
half a cup of water
Put all the dry ingredients in to the bowl and make a well. Add beaten egg, treacle and water. mix well and put into a well greased tin. sprinkle liberally with Demerara sugar and cook for approx. 30 mins at 180. Test with knife and when it comes out clean it's done.
Wonderful sliced still warm and eaten with or without butter. Freezes well and is even better as it's slightly less crunchy on the corners. Hope you enjoy0 -
I agree with gingerbread, keeps well and goes with a cup of tea!0

Could I use black treacle to make brownies or cookies?0

If you need brown sugar for a recipe, and don't have any, a generous dollop of treacle will turn granulated sugar into 'brown sugar' a treat.
