homemade toffee apples

Options
I can testify that this recipe is easy, works just like the toffee apples you can buy at the shows/fair.

Toffee Apples
Ingredients
6-8 small red or green apples
225g/8oz sugar
2-3 tbsp cold water
pinch of cream of tartar
a few drops of chosen food colouring
wooden ice lolly sticks
Method
Wash and dry the apples and put them to one side.

To make the toffee, place the sugar in a small saucepan and add the water. Put the pan over a low heat and stir the mixture until the sugar has completely dissolved. Now add the cream of tartar - this helps to prevent the sugar from crystallising - and bring the mixture to the boil. Turn the temperature down and simmer gently for approximately 10 minutes until the liquid turns golden brown. Add a few drops of chosen food colouring.

Remove the pan from the heat and allow the bubbles to subside. Quickly dip the apples into the toffee and leave them to cool on greaseproof paper or on a kitchen surface that has been rubbed with a little oil.

CHILDREN - a word of warning. Please do not be tempted to make these toffee apples without an adult as the toffee is very hot and can be dangerous.

That does sound easy, I think I'll make some for my lot this afternoon. I wonder how long it takes to set.

Well, I couldn't get this recipe to work I'm afraid. The sugar would not colour and the cream of tartar didn't seem to stop it from crystallising. I ended up with crunchy white stuff rather than toffeee. I didn't use colouring.

I managed to rescue it though by adding a lump of butter, some more sugar (brown this time) and water plus a tsp of vinegar. I let it boil rapidly rather than simmer and dipped my apples. It coated 4 and a half apples with hard toffee. The kids will love them.

for that amount of sugar I would have used 2 fluid oz's water and boiled it to small crack on a sugar themometer the cream of tartar doesn't make much difference

I just made this recipe. It was really easy and would have been perfect if I hadn't messed about at the end and burnt it. It went really bitter and I had to bin it and the apples because no-one would eat them.

BUT I'll use that recipe again now I know not to wait until it starts smoking! :o

Tip for cleaning the pan: Boil some water in it after cooking and it'll lift straight off.

Link added. There's a video showing you how to do it too.

  • Anyone have any recipies for toffee apples?

Hi, How I always make it, is just to put some sugar in a pot and heat slowly until it melts and browns, then dip the apples in and leave to go cold and harden... you can add a little hot water if needed or some cream to make it more like a fudge.. but this won't stay on the apples as well.. HTH
