Two tins black treacle

Another plea for help - I've been sorting through my kitchen cupboards and found 2 tins of black treacle, one just about to go out of date. I seem to buy a tin every time I do a nigella gammon *shrugging*

Anyhoo, has anyone any ideas what to do with them? I am loathe to throw anything out since I've started reading this forum

Thanks!

Look up recipes for gingerbread. Treacle tends to keep for quite a long time. If you get stuck pm me and I`ll send you one.Mary Berry does a nice one.

Cheers guys, I was wondering whether it would be ok to use after the best by date as I dont see how it can go off  but then my knowledge of these things is a bit restricted :D

Christmas cake? *shuddering* I can't stand dried fruit in any shape or form, all my dad's fault, he used to chase me round the kitchen with currant pasty saying it was dead flies

Sorry, that's not true. Treacle can ferment in storage, which can make the cans explode. See When Treacle Goes Bad. I've never had a problem, but would advise caution opening the tin, if it's over the sell by/best before date.

Can I just add - I did the same think and found a tin of black treacle in the back of my cupboard past it's sell by date. Thought to myself, how can treacle go off. But opened the tin and yuck - it smelt very strange so just binned it!

  • Here is my ginger cake recipe - it's heaven! You will need a decent size roasting tin to cook it in and a fairly big saucepan for the mixing.

    10oz (275g) golden syrup

    10oz (275g) black treacle

    8oz (225g) muscovado sugar

    8oz (225g) soft margarine

    1lb (450g) self raising flour

    2 teaspoons mixed spice

    2 teaspoons ground ginger

    4 eggs beaten

    4 tablespoons milk

    Instructions

    Pre heat oven to 160c/325f.

Grease tin and line with greaseproof paper

Measure syrup, treacle, sugar and marg into pan and heat gently until melted. Remove from heat and stir in flour and spices. Add eggs and milk and beat until smooth. Pour into tin.

Bake for 40-45 minutes. Allow to cool in tin for a bit and turn out.

    Chop into pieces.

  • Hi, Beanie! Thanks for that recipe. Does it improve with keeping, or have you never been able to resist it to try?

Is black treacle the same as molasses? If so it can be used instead of sugar for yeast activation when making bread. It makes the bread a bit darker.

If the same as molasses, it probably also contains iron, like molasses do.
