  • I joined WW and lost 5 stone in a year! I was motivated and it felt great. People didn't recognise me, I went down to a size 10 (from 18/20) and clothes shopping became a pleasure instead of a depressing chore. I could buy lovely matching underwear sets without spending a fortune and my confidence rocketed.

Then, at my slimmest, I gave up smoking. Now, 3 and a half years later I have put all of the weight back on! I hate shopping because nothing fits and I cannot now face those people who encouraged and congratulated me.

I cook every meal from scratch, we eat loads of veg and I do not add fat to anything. I am only 5'2 and don't exercise as much as I should so my portion sizes should be tiny but they're not - this is my downfall. I love cooking but I also love food.

I need to get my motivation back as I would love to walk down the street with my head held high, I currently feel like a failure. Perhaps just sharing the way I feel this way is the first step?

Hi louisephill, portion size is also my downfall too - apart from craving a certain bakery's pasties!!! You are very welcome to join us as we all eat healthily for our challenge, and further in to the future for some of us too.
There's plenty of tips here and encouragement here, and you are not a failure, you have done the best thing you could for the your health and now it's time to tackle the side effects i.e., weight gain.

  • Hello smokybabe,
Thank you for that. On Monday morning I will stand on the dreaded scales and make an effort to lose 10lbs by Christmas - I think that could be an achievable goal.
    Good luck to you all.

    Hello Louisephill,
I think there are so many contributors on here who will relate to your comments. I know I definitely do. I LOVE my food, and whilst I enjoy my healthy foods, love my veg and fruits, I also love cakes, crisps (oh how I miss doritos!), unhealthy cuts of meat, the crispy rind on the bacon, the skin on the chicken, etc.

Portion control has been fundamental to being able to lose weight for me. My way round it has been to swap my normal size plate for a smaller one. I can fill it full, and somehow it works psychologically too, as I don't feel hungry after meals. Yes, I could easily snack and graze, as I have done before, but I stick to only eating at mealtimes. If I'm struggling to make it to mealtimes, I eat a bit earlier if I can, and include something high in fibre to keep me fuller for longer (a piece of seedy wholemeal bread seems to do the trick).

I've done WW before too, but simply couldn't face going back as a failure either, and essentially, shouldn't I be able to do this on my own without having to apply the pressure of potential failure in front of a group each week? Hey, I'm fed up enough just with being fat!

Your goal certainly sounds realistic, and obtainable. Why don't you set yourself an even smaller target of deciding to really control your eating habits over the next 2 weeks. I bet you'll see an immediate positive result, and that's what you need to keep your motivation. Remember you'll plateau, but also remember you can kick-start it again by adding a bit of exercise, or reducing calorie intake by 100 a day for a week to get it moving again.

I'm not one for the gym, but I drag myself out for a fast walk a couple of times a week, and that seems to work. If I don't exercise, then I focus more on what I'm eating, choose lower calorie options, and like you do a lot of homemade meals (like cottage pie with more veg than mince beef in it).

Know what time of day you're liable to fall off the wagon too. Mine is when I'm preparing the evening meal. I'd usually eat a couple of slices of toast, nibble on ham or anything else to hand, then sit down and eat the meal too! No wonder I gained weight. I now make a cup of coffee, and make myself wait; if I can't wait I get a smaller meal. It's about being honest with yourself more than anything else, because that's who we're cheating at the end of the day.

I was reading another forum where people were wanting to diet, and I was amused to read how they all claimed to eat very healthily, lots of fruit and veg, and didn't eat chocolate, etc., and one of them was 32 stone! Whilst I don't want to be judgemental, at 32 stone you'd have to eat a field of carrots for the veg to be contributing to that kind of weight gain wouldn't you? It's about honesty, as I said. I'm fat because I eat the foods that are packed with fat and sugar as well as the healthy foods. I either have to eat less of each to keep the calories down, or cut some out to enable me to eat more. :A

My diet buddy from MSE 'triker' and I report our food intake to each other each day, and are totally honest about any indescretion we've had - the less said about the large toblerone the better though! We have good and bad days, days when we feel fatter than others, days when we've felt more motivated, and days when life contrives against us to make food choices difficult (like parties, and eating on the road).

So, louisephill, welcome aboard the train to Slimsville. We're here for you all the way, even when it gets a bit bumpy. :j
