Has anyone lost weight themselves--not paying out to go to a slimming club?

Hi
Has anyone managed to lose weight themselves without having to pay each week to go to a slimming club? I have joined WW in the past and managed to lose a few pounds but then I find i am struggling each week to afford the £5 fee!
Can it be done without going to a club? My OH is very slim and tells me to just cut right down(yes I know that is the answer but it is easier said than done!).I am not massively overweight but definately need to get rid of a stone!!!!!!!!
Thanks everyone

yes, of course it can. I won't give you my evil rant about the futility of commercial slimming industry, but basically, I believe these clubs want you to be reliant on them and their super-low-fat products as that's what keeps the money rolling in. The artificial sense of community created is all part of the creation of dependence.
Ok, enough of rant.
I'm no skinny bird, but I dropped and kept off 2 stone on my own. The next 20 pounds come and go (slowly).
My key was cooking everything from scratch - any time I'm under pressure and the ready meals come out, Im in trouble. Lots of whole grains and veggies and lentils. Fruit for pud. Cut down on all dairy. I didn't actually start exercisingf formally, it was enough just to be able to get up the stairs in one go!!Debt free 4th April 2007.

Yup. I lost a stone. I joined a gym and made myself go everyday - 1 hour workout and then an hour in the pool/sauna. When I couldn't afford the gym, I just started walking EVERYWHERE. And cooking everything from scratch. Then I went to my dr because I was sick of losing weight only to gain it again. She gave me some medication (Orlistat. Trade name Xenical) that has meant I'm now losing a steady 1lb a week (as long as I keep an eye on my diet and exercise). Two stone so far! it def can. WW doesnt work without willpower and motivation.
I am trying lose a bit of weight and have dug out my old ww books and am going it alone. i often go on the WW community (which is free) for help and advice. its excellent you should pay a visit.0 -
I agree with Emmzi. And those weight Watcher meals are so gross! I also lost 2 stone just by doing the sensible thing and watching portion size etc and generally trying to eat thoughtfully. Have just lost a further 7lbs (over 7 weeks) by upping my fruit and fibre. Its not easy though when you're a confirmed chocaholic!!

I tried all the slimming clubs without success, but I lost 6 stone a few years ago on my own, I set myself a new goal every week to improve my diet, one week I would start drinking more water, next change from white to wholemeal bread, then stop chocolate, take more exercise, eat more fruit and and veg etc
I just kept going like that, just one change a week and I was eating very healthily. I managed to keep it off for quite awhile, but the hardest thing is keeping it off and have to admit I have now put it back on, I'm trying to motivate myself at the moment to start again.0 -
Hi
Aww thanks everyone. I am going to try cooking everything from scratch ----going away for a few days this week and when i get back i am going to give it a go!!
I too am a confirmed chocaholic and I basically know where i am going wrong. I really dont have an excuse on the exercise front as we live right next door to a gym and I have a dog which needs taking out every day!!!

Hello i joined both ww and slimming world before.
ww i lost couple pound, couldnt really be bothered to weigh food and i lost will-power.
slimming world i lost 4 stone in year. it is good but i think my lifestyle at that time helped too.
now im on hoodia, id like to loose 4 stone. for me hoodia is great as i get no hunger pangs or that horrible dizzy feeling.
for me its not so much what i eat but when i eat and the fact that i went from dancing 4 nights a week for at least 4-5 hrs to zilch!!
so im basically not burning anything off.
The hoodia im on is £10 for 60 tablets at 2 at day so not really expensive.
it works for me and im on a forum which discuss hoodia an overal works for them too.
im hoping that when i loose say a stone i will then do more exercise as i have plenty dance dvd,s.
good luck in your weight loss0 -

Hi
I use https://www.weightlossresources.co.uk. It has a free trial for 3 days which i just sign up to over and over again. You enter weight/height etc and it tells you how many calories you should have and then you have a food diary where you put everything that you eat from the database and it auto calculates the calories in EVERYTHING. Of course after 3 days you lose all the info you have put in but I dont mind. they have just started a xmas challange too which if you follow says you can drop 2 dress sizes for xmas.
have a look, I really like it.0
