Has anyone been told the wrong gender at 20 week scan?

When I had my second, I was warned that it wasn't accurate and they couldn't see properly as he was curled up in a ball for most of the scan so they were not willing to guess the sex.
They said they'd just told a woman she was having a girl, so they painted the nursery pink and bought loads of frilly pink things, then she delivered a boy - ooops!
When I had my third, they said she was probably a girl but they couldn't be 100% sure. However I had complications and on a scan at 32 weeks, they put the scanner on my tummy and a picture of her labia filled the screen. The midwife said "oooh a hamburger, it's definitely a girl then". It put me off hamburgers for a while though :rotfl:Here I go again on my own....0 -
I think if you're told you're having a boy (like me - 6 weeks to go!), then the statistics are high that it is a boy (due to a certain piece of anatomy spotted on the scan that makes it obvious...).
If you're told it's a girl, however, then as there's no "external anatomy" to look for on the scan, so it's more likely a mistake can be made, hence most of the above describe those who are told they are having a girl, and it turns out to be a boy.
In short, it's easier to see and be sure if something is there (i.e. a willy!) than to see and be sure if something is not there!
(and they always make you sign something saying they can never be 100% certain).
I've been told that it's actually more reliable to look for three lines between the baby's legs than any "external anatomy"! I guess it depends on how the baby's lying and who's looking though...
FWIW a friend of mine was told she was having a girl, and would need a c- section due to a back problem. She birthed her 10lb 4oz son with just gas and air! I think the pink clothes are still in storage...They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
With my first two you could not miss the fact that it was a boy - it was even quite clear on the scan pictures. This time, the woman got a picture right looking at baby's bottom lol! and there were the three lines and no sign of any boy bits so we are 99% sure its a girl. However just in case we have a boy's name ready and also I packed a red sleepsuit as well as a pink one - just in caseBSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0

Why do you ask?
I was recently told a story of a woman who was screaming her sons name to come out and a little girl popped out instead :shocked:0 -
I can see why someone whom has been told they are expecting one then has the other could be pretty upset. You spend a lot of time bonding with your baby and picturing how they will look etc, when pregnant. To go through half of a pregnancy bonding with an unborn baby as a boy or girl, then getting the other must be a real shock. I am sure ultimately the mother will realise just to have a healthy baby is the important thing.
I didnt find out with my first child because my hospital didnt allow it. I was pretty terrified I might have a girl, because of the trend of mother.daughter relationships in my family being abysmal and feeling I would struggle to bond with a girl. Course she was a girl and I was quite freaked out. I ended up with PND, but not just because of that, for other things like undiagnosed silent refulx etc.
With my second child, i wanted to find out. She was a girl and i had about an hour of feeling frightened i would not bond again then 20 weeks of bonding with my baby as a girl. Best thing I ever did, when she was born, i was on cloud nine.
I found out with my boys too. I was never told the wrong gender.:starmod:Sealed Pot Challenge Member 1189:starmod:0 -
Are you kidding? Were the parents not just thankful that they were lucky enough to have happy healthy children (assuming they were happy and healthy) regardless of the sex?! Some people just don't know they're born!! (Excuse the pun) I would snap my own arm off to have a child regardless of sex, even if I had been out and bought pink stuff and had to put a boy in it or vice versa.
No not kidding.
There's a big sign up in the room now that says they won't tell you anymore.Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

Where I live, they wouldn't tell mothers the sex of the baby until recently. They changed it one week before I had my 20 week scan with my youngest so I was one of the first to be allowed to ask at the scan for the sex. I was told I was definitely having a boy, the sonographer pointed out the penis on the screen and said it was very obviously a male.
I had a little girl. I didn't stop laughing for about two days. We didn't have anything for a girl, everything was blue except two white sleepsuits. It's just clothes, though. I suppose if she had been a boy and everything was pink it might have been different but nobody cared she was in blue.0 -
I was told that at the 20 week scan with my second that the sonographer was 'pretty certain' it was a girl but there were no guarantees and she could be wrong. We accepted that opinion and I spent the following 20 weeks touching wood when I told people it was a girl. We only bought one or two pink things, had boys names just in case, and went into hospital with white babygros. She did come out a girl:D0

All the more reason not to know the sex of the baby prior to birth.0 -
Yes: My mother was told she was expecting a boy, and then I popped out as a female!!0
