Am also planning on leaving my heating off till November if possible. Have taken 3 coats to the dry cleaners today ready for the winter ... is going to cost £22  but still cheaper than a new coat!!

Not yet - its actually fairly warm still in the flat though - we live in a small flat and we get a lot of benefit from heat rising up from the people below :)

I run the boiler for an hour or so each morning, and thats all we need.

Am in south east Scotland and although its lovely in the day time at the moment [2 hot 2 wear a jacket out today] it is getting chilly after the sun goes down and its also getting darker so much earlier. My sunflowers in the garden are still blooming away so it feels quite summery during the day. However there's a definite autumnal feeling starting so might have to have the heating on in the evenings for a while. Been putting it off for as long as possible because of the cost and have switched suppliers yet again but everyone seems to be putting their prices up. Someone earlier mentioned turning into their mother - mine used to wear several cardies and a seemit - can see that coming for me too

    Keep warm Teapot
  • Mine is still switched off, but I have to confess to having had the gas fire on last night for a few minutes as I was cold.I pay my bills by direct debit, but it's still so nice to see that gas figure on the summer bill be about 5 units for 3 months ( gas hob!) We use an immersion heater for our water in the summer.
I think I will be putting it on within the next few weeks though as it's definitely much colder today ( can i make it till November without the children complaining?).Will only have it on for an hour or so, morning and evening though, I would NEVER leave it on overnight, unless it was at major risk of freezing and we don't get much of that in Liverpool.

    17degrees you must be freezing.

Not true, as we have double glazing, cavity wall insulation, grant-topped-up loft insulation and heavy curtains.
I'll admit that on the extremely cold winter days the thermostat setting will be tweaked up a bit - but not much beyond 20 degrees - and only for a short while.

I have an immersion heater, but never thought of using it in the summer instead of the gas boiler. Does it work out cheaper? We would need it for two baths, plus water for washing up etc.

Heating not on yet- I want to survive until at least tomorrow because I ahve never had the heating off by October.
  • I usually have my heating on a lot and I can't believe I've gone thru summer until now without the main heating on. Thanks guys for the replies, keep them coming!

I assume it does, but to be honest that's not the reason we do it.The boiler is in my daughter's bedroom and her room gets unbelievably hot in the summer so we use the immersion instead and it's so much cooler.I leave it on all the time as it's not on a timer, and my summer bills ( we have dual fuel) are still fairly low, so I assume it would be cheaper too....
