I'd recommend putting your heating on every now and then in the summer, just to give it a work out - especially the pump, and you'll not get any horrible surprise in winter as suggested before.

I am still not using any heating at the moment, but I'll probably have to soon. The weather forecast looks like the night temperatures are going down, as I wake up at 4 every morning, I'll have to start heating my flat for one hour before I wake up, there is nothing worse than getting out of a nice warm bed into a freezing environment. As for the evenings, my flat is sandwiched between two flats (top and bottom), so, with a little luck, they will put the heating on in the evenings and I will be able to last a bit longer without heating in the evenings. Of course they might think the same, and we'll all freeze to death!
  • Thanks for the replies guys. I think it would make it easier if I knew that others were wanting a challenge too. I do put on the bathroom heater from time to time as it's cold in the bathroom, but I won't be turning on main heating here for as long as is poss. It would be good to know that we are all in the same boat, so please keep me informed if you still haven't put your heating on!

I'm at an advantage living in the South West as it is milder but being a person who always had the heating on (even in Summer!) and always feeling the cold this is going to be a real challenge for me. I need the support guys!

Dazzie, I did a quick google search and you can still get those heaters here:

They might not be the cheapest but just put in Super Ser portable gas heater into your search engine. Quite a few websites out there!

Don't be silly. We haven't even got the duvet out yet....never mind putting the heating on.

hehehehe I can't believe anyone has their heating on yet either! We are still in T shirts with the windows open day and night. Windows have to be closed and jumpers cracked out for a few weeks before the boiler is fired up. Last year I seem to think we put the heat on in mid Nov.
Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.
  • Windows open day and night? Bbbbrrrr you're making me feel cold!
  • I have not put the heating on but I do turn it on once a week for 10 mins to ensure the pump does not seize up
Just good practice I suppose would hate the pump to pack up first time of putting the heating on which I guess by the look of today wont be too long
The trouble with work is that it interferes with living
  • I was tempted last night (Im in Central Scotland - but in a pretty exposed location at 500feet above sea level- according to my 1967 OS map!)- but I grabbed my sleeping bag instead and made myself a nice cup of Cadburys Hot Choc.

I'm looking at putting in a Wood burning stove...more cost effective than running the Aga Rayburn in the long term as it eats up fuel oil...but at least Oil is cheaper than Gas!

The winter will be a real test as It got down to -17degrees one night last winter! at least it prompted me to get my loft insulated and my cavity walls filled...it almost reduces you to tears when you can 'see' your fuel going down....unlike gas/electricity...you have to pay for it before you use it! It makes the cost 'more visible'. Especially at over £550 for a tankfull!! GULP!
I am NOT a Woman! - its Overland Landy (as in A Landrover that travels Overland)

Better to be approximately right than precisely wrong.
  • I don't think I would survive in Scotland as beautiful as it is. I'm too soft but I'm trying to toughen up where heating is concerned. I would absolutely love a wood burning stove, but living in a modern house with no chimney I guess that's impossible.
