A well insulated tank will retain heat for a long time. I have my econ 7 immersion heater on overnight and the water is still very hot the next evening when I do the washing up.
A combi boiler is probably the best option, since it only heats on demand.

lol I had to do an NEA Energy awareness course through work the other week and they tell you morbid facts about heating and cold snaps.

For example when the MET office predict that there is going to be a cold snap next week they contact the NHS to warn them that there is going to be a possible increase in heart attacks (As its colder the blood thickens, meaning your heart has to work harder), then the following week after the cold snap there will be an increase in stroke victims.

Also bits like if you have had a pillow for 4 years - 25% of its weight would be dead skin etc.

Its pretty morbid but fascinating all the same.

    - In Regards to heating - No not got it on yet but the mornings are definately getting colder.
  • Not yet... I'm going to try to last until 1 Nov :D

Gas is still about one quarter of the cost of electricity. A gas boiler is still the most cost effective way of heating your water.
On what do you base that assumption? Can you show me the calculation that shows that to heat 10 litres of water it is cheaper by gas?

I almost crumbled last night - my flat was very cold, but instead I went to bed - lovely and toasty.

i have not had the bolier on since March 2006 and don't intend to start it till at least the end of this month. i hope i can hold on for longer as i don't really feel the cold at the moment and i hope this will last longer

i average at the moment a £10 bill every 2 months since switching off the bolier (i provide meter readings before every bill)

i was just wondoring how long other people have had their boiler off?

i hope that i don't get a nasty surprise the the bolier does not work as pumps tend to seize if not used for a long term

I put it on this morning for a brief while, we usually just pop the gas fire on downstairs and that does the trick. Was going to try and last to 1st November but have a small baby and his little fingers were frozen this morning bless him!

and set the timer to come on for an hour on the mornings and just under 5 hours in the evenings during the week. It got too cold in the mornings but I have, at least, kept the heating controls down very low (at the moment, anyway!).

I'll be buying some jumpers/cardis/cotton jammies over the next couple of weeks so those will help also.

  • I turned ours on last night.

But first I went round and bled all the radiators, checked the thermostatic valves, made sure the system was properly pressurized (we have a modern unvented CH system), and altered the programmable timer so that it's not on for any longer than it needs to be. If you can with your programmer, it's worth dropping the set temperature in the middle of the day - you feel the cold less then.
