Hey...my Dads a plumber, and always keeps his heating on during the colder months all the time 24/7. WHY? because he know's what he's doing. No this doesn't apply to all types of central heating systems. But if you have the standard wet system of boiler, tank, stat and radiators...keep it on all the time...!!!
Just lower your stat to say 15 when you leave the house and pop it up if you need to when you come home or it gets cold. Let the stat do the work, when the temperature drops the heating will kick in. It will get the temperature back up and switch off again. If you leave it off all day to lets say to come on again at 3PM ready for your return from work the system will go cold and the amount of energy it will take to reheat from scratch again will be more than if you would have left it on. I tried this last year for the first time and paid no more than the previous year. My house was warmer and the system was working under less pressure.
Trust me my Dads a plumber...0 -

Did notice a chill when I was jumping in the shower this morning but still resisting , I have a dilemma too this winter as I am not going to be working for the next few months it means the heating will need to be on at 5.30am for OH and son getting up for work but I won't be up and about till 8ish so I have to get round the problem of having the heating on not just for 1hr early morning but 3 or 4 hrs have to think this one through , its probabley going to mean having it on for 1hr at 5.30 and then getting up and flicking the overide 1hr button so the bathroom is nice and toasty for my shower....
That means I have to get out of bed in the cold to go flick the switchbbbbrrrrrrrr!!!!

Can't belive how many tight people are out there! get your bloody heating on you fools...do you want to suffer, do you want your kids to have colds, coughs and other nasty diseases??? Half of you wouldn't think twice about buying a round of drinks for £15, a meal out or something else trivial. Why is it why get tight about the important things and are loose and carefree with things that do not matter...pu your leggings and thick jumpers away and get your heating on!!0

spreadtheword maybe you could explain how having the heating on or off makes any difference to having coughs colds etc as they are viruses? Most viruses are picked up by touching something that is infected or being near to someone who has a virus...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I had to laugh at Spreadtheword's post. I hate to admit it but in some people's cases what SpreadtheWord says rings true. Hmmmm my only vice is smoking so I guess I fit into that category. I don't go out, drink or have meals out.
I did cave in last night, I put the heating on in my bedroom for 10 minutes while getting ready for bed. I put the bathroom heater on while having a shower but that's it so far. With regards to keeping the heating off, if people have babies and children or vulnerable people living with you please do not try this at home!0 -
This is honestly the first time come October that our heating hasn't been used yet, and it's not because we're tight! BUT if it gets any chillier it will definitely come on! The heavy duvet has made an appearance today.0

I live on my own so I'm not affecting anyone else, plus an overly warm environomnent is worse for health than being slightly cooler and putting on more clothes. If you leave it off all day to lets say to come on again at 3PM ready for your return from work the system will go cold and the amount of energy it will take to reheat from scratch again will be more than if you would have left it on.
The only reason "on all the time" works is because people set the temperature lower than they would do.Happy chappy0 -
I have turned the heating off (cause the sun came out) after having it on for the last couple of hours, I cant sit in a cold house even with a jumper on0

Spreadtheword, what do you think people did before central heating? Putting a jumper on is much healthier than putting the heating on, having a very hot house in cold weather actually exacerbates many health probelms, in my case its not only to save a bit of money what with high fuel charges but to save of energy on behalf of the environment as well, I don't have any elderly people or babies in my house just a cat who would love to snuggle up to the radiator but will just have to lump it for a while longer!
