Put my heating on for the first time last night, it was freezing. Today ended up being really warm weather wise and the house was roasting hot. Storage heaters etc, pain to regulate the heat etc.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0

No this doesn't apply to all types of central heating systems. But if you have the standard wet system of boiler, tank, stat and radiators...keep it on all the time...!!!
Just lower your stat to say 15 when you leave the house and pop it up if you need to when you come home or it gets cold. Let the stat do the work, when the temperature drops the heating will kick in. It will get the temperature back up and switch off again. If you leave it off all day to lets say to come on again at 3PM ready for your return from work the system will go cold and the amount of energy it will take to reheat from scratch again will be more than if you would have left it on. I tried this last year for the first time and paid no more than the previous year. My house was warmer and the system was working under less pressure.
Trust me my Dads a plumber...
yes i'd second that, my husband's a plumber and he says the same thing.
he still hasnt put room stats in our own house though!
i dont usually take his advice, but when it's cold in winter it's a good excuse to stay warm 'i'm following professional advice' lol
my parents dont believe this, and their house is always freezing! you're right, leaving it on all the time with a thermostat doesn't make it more expensive, and it also guards against burst pipes apparently.:)0 -
sammyjammy wrote:Spreadtheword, what do you think people did before central heating? Putting a jumper on is much healthier than putting the heating on, having a very hot house in cold weather actually exacerbates many health probelms, in my case its not only to save a bit of money what with high fuel charges but to save of energy on behalf of the environment as well, I don't have any elderly people or babies in my house just a cat who would love to snuggle up to the radiator but will just have to lump it for a while longer!

i find it makes me feel worse, sleepy/bunged up nose etc. (even though i like being warm obviously!)
the children havent mentioned anything yet, in fact they are still wearing t-shirts, no socks etc, around the house, so it must be ok as they definitely let me know if they're not happy about anything lol!
maybe we're all warm-blooded or something:)0 -
I have been so cold indoors and had to go out today. I put on my woolly hat and ventured out to be pleasantly surprised. It was warmer outside than it was inside! I couldn't believe my eyes though when I saw this guy walking down the street reading his paper with no top on whatsoever. It was quite warm, but not that warm!!0

I put ours on from 7 till 8 tonight, just enough to take the chill off the house. I don't think they noticed it went off so early.Love living in a village in the country side0

I put it on last night (Wednesday) I forgot to switch the timer on to auto so it was on all night abeit 20c. I hate being hot in bed with central heating on but didnt realise until morning it was on all night
Ist a cold very wet day today so its on again but on 20c. I cant really not have it on as my daughter suffers from poor ciruclation and she is recovering from a operation and is wheelchait bound for a few months.
I dread the bill this year, it was the first year I every had to make worry about the cost. Not because of dwinding income as I have a fixed income but like many its just too high and something has to give.0 -

hehe I think in our case Mr Pincher just can't be bothered learning the central heating controls! Also I pay the bills so I can moan at him about his wastage
In our last house where we only had heating in one room it took him about 7months before he bothered to learn how to switch it on!!0
