It's a waste of time using the words "legally", and implying "legally" they can do this and can't do that. Tescos are completely a law unto themselves, and do what they want. Head Office is useless if you approach them with a query, and they will always say "We cant override the stores decision". Dont waste your time on these muppets. Make sure you have a rock solidy argment and then take it to trading standards if you need to get something enforced especially the R&R policy - that should do the trick.

Is the R&R policy applicable in all stores?, my local one just gives you the difference in money back. If this is not the case, what do I do about it ? state the policy ?. Thanks.

I would NEVER mention Refund and Retain ( or Replace or whatever ;) .This is a term Joe/Josaphine public would not know or use.

You don't need to make a song and dance - just look wide eyed and innocent and point behind the cs desk to the big blue sign where their overcharge policy is on clear display.
"Oh but I was just reading that sign while I've been waiting......doesn't that mean you give me back ALL I've paid, and I get to keep it as well ?"
Here is the point where blondes can look that extra bit dumb, the senior MSErs look a little more frail and uncertain, if the cs is the opposite sex to you, you can smile coyly.....
The world of acting is your oyster.
    Or you could try..
"Oh but my friend says Tesco give me my money back,AND I get to keep it..."
    Or:-
"Oh but last week when you overcharged me, the lady/man (delete as appropriate) gave me my money back and told me I get to keep it....."

I would always end of a slightly puzzled note, as IF YOU were uncertain of your facts.;)
I have never been told that the policy doesn't exist, but some cs do regularly try and give me the difference.
I must admit that RECENTLY most have automatically given me a full refund and the item back and even explained what they were doing - "Because we have overcharged you..."
"Oh THANK YOU" I gush looking suitably surprised and overcome with gratitude.

When are the oscar nominations due in again ? :D
  • Can I just ask, on out of date SEL stickers do the C/S never try to get out of it by saying that the label states when the offer ends? If so what do you say to them????

I went shopping today looking at the games/dvds and cds - but about 90% had no price whatsoever - neither sel nor stickers.
Yes they avoided R&Rs, but equally, how many shoppers would pick one up if they didn't know if it was £3.97 or £19.97 ?

no need to apologise, its moved the debate on and developed education.

So did we reach a conclusion on how long expired sels can stay on the shelf?

It seems to me (and I don't know Jack) that Tesco decde the opening hours they want to have in the store and it is rather up to them to ensure that they can get the thngs done that need to be done - like displaying acurate prices.

I didn't decide that they needed to be open 24 hrs a day in some stores - they did so I'm not inclined to be masively sympathetic with the diffiulties they have.

Having said that Teso are the only people who do this R&R thing- everywhere else you would just get a disinterested refund of the difference - my experience is of many more mis prices in Morrisons and Asda and a considerable lack of enthusiasm from customer servce when you point out their mstakes.

I did cc Terry Leahy in with my email so I'll wait a few days and then copy in another email to Nick Johnson- anyone know his email address.

Tescos seem to have a fairly simple method for email addresses....they seem to put the "." between the first and second names....for example

    customer.services
    David.Stewart
    Kevan.Kelly
    Joanne.Leith
terry.leahy...although Sir Terry appears to have 2 or 3 different ones

all of these except Sir Terry's are followed by @tesco.co.uk

I think it will be safe to say that Nick Johnson's address will be

Nick.Johnson@tesco.co.uk .....providing of course you got the name correct in the first place.

    Unless anyone else knows different.
    Couponing....."every little hurts"

Half of the people can be part right all of the time, Some of the people can be all right part of the time.
But all the people can't be all right all the time. .........I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

  • Today's scamming activities:

I have adopted the veterans advice to pay cash and avoid using your club card so that you can't be traced.

6 x Kenco Iced Coffee - out of date SEL said 3 for £3, went through at £1.39 each - £8.34 R&R, very nice CS lady said I would get a refund and I could keep the product. I said 'are you sure' ? she said 'oh yes', I said 'you want to keep that quiet', she said 'I have heard that there is even a website that encourages people to go and look for pricing errors', I said 'surely not, that's shocking', she said 'those people needed to get a life'.

I wonder what website that could be ;)

Visited a second store, thought I had struck gold in the lager section, 2 out of date SEL's one was for Carlsberg Export 330ml bottles in a 6 pack - £7.49 (I am sure that is an inflated price!) Buy one get one free.

Fosters 500cl 4 packs, £3.39 each, two for six pounds.

Put 6 packs of the Carlsberg Export and 4 packs of the Fosters in my trolley along with 2 750cl bottels of Hoegaarden (decent lager on offer 2 for £5) plus some throat lozenges. Went to the checkout with anticipation of a killing.
£64.38 pounds of goods, with offers should have paid £40.45.
The till came up as £40.07 to pay ?!?!? worked the mental arithmetic several ways couldn't get it to add up, so I had to advise the chap that I had left my wallet in the car or at work. They created a 'held order' and put the trolley behind CS.

Back in my car I could not work out what had happened, contemplated giving up. Decided to go back in with £20's worth of loose change (my parking money) to double check the prices.
Went to the checkout with the 2 Hoegaarden's, the throat lozenges, 2 x Fosters and a large pack of toilet rolls. Told the girl that I was not sure I had enough money and could she put it through the till for me to see, said she could only create a 'held order'. Total price that came up was again not what I was expecting, told the girl I did not have enough money and could she take the Fosters off. Paid for the remaining goods and when back to my car.

Eureka moment - The Fosters on the receipt showed a 2 for £6.30 multibuy saving, SEL said 2 for £6, a cunning plan began to form in my mind.

Went back in armed with more cash, loaded 6 x 4 packs of Fosters in to my trolley plus ?? (a large pack of toilet rolls). Went through checkout, over-charged (even more than I was expecting!), wandered down to CS.
Chap had put through 7 x 4 packs of Fosters (Tesco revenge ??). Explained to CS I had bought 6 been charged for 7, received a £3.39 refund, began to walk away, stopped, went back to CS said the price charged for the remaing 6 Fosters looked wrong, 'I was sure it was 2 for £6, not 2 for £6.30', showed the nice lady to the lager section, she said 'oh yes it does say 2 for £6', left the SEL in place (very kind for the next r&rer).

CS Lady offered me 90p the amount of over-charge, I pointed out the big poster behind her saying I was entitled to a refund and could keep the goods.
She said 'you want that, I am sorry we have been told to offer the difference first', I said 'I would like the refund', she said 'fine', I need to call a manager.
Manager on phone advised her to give me the R&R.

Now she then did something very strange, rather than refund me the 3 x £6.30 i.e. £18.90 (the amount I had been charged), she refunded me £20.34 (6 x £3.39) !!! more money than I had paid, I pointed this out, she said it didn't matter 6 x £3.39 was better for me, I didnt argue.

I had to give my name and address, so I used my imagination, sorry Mr Duck :D

    Today's total for R&Rs £28.68

    Every little helps.

Only problem is I don't drink knats !!!! lagers, so I will give some away and keep the rest for Christmas guests.

This is one of the offers that they just seem to roll on, similar to the 3 for £4.00 on big bottles of Stella. Even if you see an out of date SEL, it doesn't follow that the offer itself is out of date. For example, in the Express near me, they have an out of date SEL for Smirnoff Ice 4 packs, 2 for £7.00, but the offer is still on and other stores have up to date SELs. I can only think that the store staff just don't bother to replace old SELs with like for like information.

I think you are spot on !

Some of the lagers had new labels on top of old labels with the same offer and just a later date.
  • I saw the Fosters today - didn't buy it, as it really is gnat's !!!!. Saw mispriced Finest British Beef Rump Steaks, too (£10.98 per kg on the new SEL, £11.98 per kg on the packs). Didn't bother with those, either. Did buy some Diet Coke 6 packs (1.25L bottles - expired BOGOF offer).
