Frequent, this may sound like typical tesco employee defending their employer here however as a price integrity team we put out far many more price decrease labels than price increase labels on a weekly basis.

  • Not very happy! Inspired by the posts on the "tesco misprices" I've just gone to my local Tesco to try my luck with the 10% off on all PAYG phones. Well, the Motorola was one of 3 phones which had white sickers on while all the other phones had yellow stickers one with the original prices and the new 10% discounted price. Sure enough I was charged £69.99 for the Motorola. I duly went to the customer service desk where 1st lady gave me about 5 excuses why she wouldn't give me discount. Her supervisor gave me further 5. So we called the manager in. He tried to persuade me that £69.99 was actually the discounted price. I showed him their phone autumn brochure which they had instore which showed this phone at £69.99 so obviously this was the full price not the discounted price. He then told me he would reduce the phone as a goodwill gesture for all the waiting to £60 (I spent about 45 minutes in there!). I said (in a very polite and friendly manner) - look behind you it clearly states that if overcharge r&r applies. He told me that I technically wasn't overcharged because £60 wasn't a discount but his goodwill gesture and that it's too much money for r&r anyway. I've had enough by then so I just said OK, can I have a refund and you have the phone back.
I now think I should've kept the phone and got in touch with the HO. What do you guys think?

I've now slept on this and I'm thinking I should write to the HO anyway just to complain about how rather rude the manager was and how he didn't honour the company policy of R&R despite the fact that it was displayed in huge letters on the wall where he was standing and which I pointed out to him. I would also add that he misinformed me about the fact that there's no maximum on R&R (as he said £60 was too much for r&r) - in fact he lied to me.

If you read my post on page 76 (the long one) you can read the email I would expect to see in reply.

However, I would still do it...

    Hmmph.
Bought an l6 no 10% off.

CS refused on the basis that it wasn't on the leaflet ( )

Tried making them see the light for a couple of minutes but didn't want to cause an argument with the nice CS girl acting under her supervisors orders...

Phoned HO in the carpark, said they'd phone back...+didn't.

Phoned HO again and they actually rang back this time, saying they are allowed to advertise phones as having 10% but charging full price, and if I wanted to know which phones are not included in "10% off all payg phones" then I should have asked a member of staff. They also said Trading Standards would back them up on this. Offered 10% as 'goodwill'

I'm about to phone HO and (forewarning them of course), record the call, then ask them if they think that Trading Standards allow such practise. Interesting eh?

On the leaflet it clearly states.. "here a SOME examples." they dont show them all.. also stated "10 % of ALL pay as you go mobies"

If oyu are recording hte call you must also state that at the beginning of the call..

    Good luck!
  • Good to see you back SPa, your posts are as informative and useful as ever

I think your post about photography should say "not permitted" and not "now permitted"

Had same problem last night and asked for manager to give me a call this morning.. had a call this morning and was told "HO have made a balls up and the 10% should have come off yesterday but didnt so come on down and collect a refund!" That was on a L6 by the way. She was very appologetic and was nice as pie.. was there over an hour last night with 4 monkeys...i mean CS advisors and i had every story going. Trust me you have been overcharged!!

Should I also warn them that it may be admissable as evidence in court? Otherwise it wouldn't be good enough for trading standards to act on would it?
(Just imagine a recording of Sir Terry saying they can break TS law if they like!! )

No the poster clearly says All payg mobile phones no mention of the Tesco network, SA agreed this once we were in front of the poster and then changed her excuse.
