I didn't see anyone answer this so I'll have a stab.

The SELs on catchweight products aren't removed for marketing reasons.

Some smart bod in the marketing department (I'm assuming it's done centrally rather than in store as HO will have access to more sales information than in store) will spend their day working out which products have to go where to maximise sales, contribution (some products with a higher cost will give the store more profit in pounds) and to take account of any special offers that are running.

They will then send a template to a store on how to display those lovely Willow Farm chicken pieces, so that customers look at the fancy packaging, see the pic of the nice farmer and pay the premium. Look at the eye level shelves next time you're there - 99% of the time it's either premium stuff or the stuff with the high margins.

Anyway, without the SELs the average shelf stacker will probably just bung in a load of meat onto any old shelf without particularly caring.
Let's face it - CS staff spend long enough looking at the SELs when we ask for R&R, and saying it's not the same product so they know how interested the shelf stackers are ;)

That's why the SELs will stay - Tesco are sharp enough to know that however much we take in R&R they will more than make up in smart marketing.
That's why they have more than £1 billion profit.
One word sums up this entire post:

    Planograms. ;)

Incidentally, it's not just down to the marketing bods. Product placement is also a key factor in buyer/supplier negotiations. A lot of the time, a product is planned to go in a specific spot because it's part of the buyer/supplier agreement. You then get compliance checks to make sure the product is where it's meant to be.

  • Anyone read my post above!! I need input!!!
  • Had a bad experience at Tesco Coventry tried to get a refund on 2 L6's but was refused was told it only applies to the ones with sign next to them, unfortunately the section I was looking at didn't have the 10% signs on them. Walked out with a refund, but left all my details do you think I have any chance of getting anything from HO as surely the store would have a record of what I was charged, my details and should know the fact 10% should come off!!!

Was there anything on display to show that the offer only applied to certain phones? If not, contact HO.

Who or what was I before you came in to my life
    I am not sure
  • Hadn't read the posts today. Went to Tesco Exmouth and purchased an L6 Motorola. 10% didn't come off:confused:

Went back to cs after collection to querry and after a bit of discussion I pointed out that the price had been £69.99 for a while, backed it up with let's talkabout booklet positioned below phones. She went to see duty manager. On return said 'I can only refund up to £10.' Went on to add 'you've got keen eyes, you had some meat yesterday' (it was three days ago).

    Yes I said, I have.

Manager turns up, shakes my hand, explains that they had made a mistake and would refund. Went on to say that he knew I'd had meat before and that the rnr policy was very generous. Next time they would not have to honour the policy because......

    strap in.

'Tesco need to keep a close eye on their profit margins.'

    :rotfl:

Smiled, said thankyou and left with my new phone.

By the way there is still a white labled phone in the top row Samsung E350N Pink SEL £59.99. Also the organic rump steak is still there (flagged this up Sunday)

Also will there be a poster of me in the canteen?

you made my evening arushofblood - I've got a boot-load full of annuals too - suggest we all do a swap with each other!!! Any one for Noddy? :p

Costing me more in petrol and additional items bought instore, to make my intent less obvious, than it would to buy the !!!!!!!' Blue Peter annual in the first place, with or without the !!!!!!!' discount !! Lol !!

Ps. I've given up on Noddy, have now moved on to PowerRangers. All half a dozen annuals worth :D
  • Just bought a Sony Ericsson E350 priced £99.99 on white SEL, no discount came off which showed 10% all PAYG phones upto 29/10/06.

CS offered £10 back, I said no thanks. They took down all the signs whilst I waited and removed other white SEL's. I have kept the receipt and the goods. CS would not budge on R&R. Will try HO tomorrow morning.

Will keep you all informed. Should I give them my correct details as I got an Xbox last month? Will they hold it against me?

I took photos using my old phone of everything, even them removing all the other labels!!!:D Duty manager said it was upto HO, is that right?
