Its worrying if goods can be obtained so easily, whats to stop someone going to a big shopping centre and going in every shop and saying 'ive lost my purse/mobile phone/ipod/handbag'

The odds are they will get lucky in a couple of shops, and without any checks being done could walk away with a bag of goodies!

Lets hope that most shops have better lost property policies.

Yes, he could...but he's not going to as he doesn't want to be left on hold for God knows how long when he's home at the weekend and can deal with it in person!

I think you're showing remarkable patience on this thread, what with some people asking questions that you've already answered, some going way off topic and still others having a go at you & your son about the wisdom of letting children have expensive pieces of equipment.

I do hope that you manage to get somewhere with this, but even if you don't, please come back and let us know how it ends.

Some people do sympathise and empathise with you.

Lets hope that most owners have better common sense, as any shop (quite rightly so) would say leaving property unattended is done so at the owners own risk,

I dont know of any store policy (in any shop) that states property left behind becomes their responsibility, up until the owner of said goods can PROVE categorically that they "neglectfully" left them behind and are indeed the true proprietor. Or that the store is responsible for the loss in anyway.

So far as I know, NO such shop has such a clause, leaving it SOLELY to the owners to be a little more responsible with their treasured items.

Indeed train stations and airports are happy to "blow up" any packages or cases left behind by their owners, anything of value from Iphones to Laptops usually dont get as far as this, as just about anyone can walk around stores or stations just waiting for someone to "forget" such items and quite simply (and commonly) help themselves to them. (its a lot more easier than randomly asking if any items have been handed in).

Most shops DONT have better lost property policies, the public should be fully aware of this fact and not blame the store for their loss, moreso when indeed the fault lies SOLELY at the owner of the lost property.

Its a shame and an expensive loss, its a good lesson to learn, as no court in the land would claim it was the stores fault this item went walkies.

Thanks pollycat. Most people have been tremendously helpful but there will always be the confrontational ones who just want to challenge everything you say and try to pick an argument.

These things are sent to try us...!!:D

But the CCTV footage could be recorded over by then and it could be too late. Who is looking after your grandson when his Dad is away? Could they as his guardian not approach the police on his behalf?

Surely the issue here is not whether children should be given expensive items of technology but instead one of how JJB dealt with an item of lost property that was found and handed in by one of their staff then given to someone who was not the owner - and what involvement (or not) the police should have.

I agree the child may have been careless and the parent possibly naive by not making sure his son didn't have anything of value on him before they left for the shops but the point is that an ipod was lost, found in the shop by JJB staff then STOLEN by some scumbag chancer who just happened to overhear a conversation between 2 JJB staff.

Both parent/child and JJB it could be argued have been careless and naive...but that is not a crime. The woman who stole the ipod is the criminal and the police should be making an effort to find her and bring her to book.

I'm looking after him...and his brother! So as you can imagine I've got more than enough on my plate at the moment without trying to persuade non compliant police and JJB staff to co operate for a change!!!!!!!!!

Although I HAVE read the whole of this thread (unlike Freddie_Snowbits who either takes this thread totally off-topic or asks questions that the OP has answered more than once), I can't remember what has been said by JJB about the cctv recording that the OP clearly says shows the ipod being brought to the cash desk by a JJB employee, a woman (later to become the thief) paying and retuning a few minutes later to 'claim' her lost ipod.

This cctv recording is (I would think) is key evidence of theft.

I'd guess that shops record over these on a certain cycle.

Can anyone offer any advice to the OP about getting a copy of this from JJB before it's over-written?
Unless of course, she or her son already have a copy.
    Or it's too late.

    they took NO steps whatsoever

& how the f*ck can you mistake a £150 ipod for an iphone?
    they look nothing alike whatsoever
you could even phone the iphone to find it

    1) they should not have discussed the lost property in a 'public' area
    2) they should have made some record of the item, even just a note in the till
    3) anyone claiming the lost property should have been asked a couple of questions about it

JJB in that store have been negligent
they are a large business, they WILL have a lost property policy.
    that store disregarded the policy

I would send a letter to the store & head office informing them that you have been to the police, & that cctv & all other records have to be retained.

The store manager already knows that there has been an 'incident' as they were informed of this on the very day it happened.

If they do tape over it, destruction of evidence, tut tut

I would get the head office involved, as they could request & view the cctv, & may decide it is better for all involved to pay out for a new ipod.

Someone, either you or your son needs to find the time to deal with this on behalf of your grandson. You are too busy and your son doesn't fancy being (hypothetically?) kept on hold. One of you surely needs to take responsibility for dealing with this problem. You're too busy, your son is abroad (and wont phone)...who else is there to deal with this?

Did you watch the CCTV recording with the Manager?

    How clear is the audio?
