Doctors! And you admitted it on a public forum. Some people have no shame.:rotfl:
Seriously though. The TV licence stinks, and I think it shoudl be scrapped. The Beeb advertise plenty anyway, underhandedly, so they may as well go the whole hog. Or, we really shoudl be bale to have the signal for Beeb channels blocked, so we only receive channels paid for by advertsing.
In the meantime, people with a TV should pay it. However, it is naothe rtax, and I rather think there must be a better system of payment and enforcing payment than the current one.
Hope things improve for you soon Mandi.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -

yeah but gravitytolls went on to say this

which rubbished his comments, and they didn't state that you dont need a licence just for ownership of a TV (see my previous post). no point saying the above if you dont like the tv tax, i wonder if they are still paying it?My Signature is MY OWN!!0 -
You say TV is a luxury & not needed, but what are those on benefits supposed to do? I had to leave home at 16, I was still at college, I got aprox£42 a week out of which i had to pay gas, elec, water, food & whatever the student grant (about £200 yr) didn't cover in cost of books etc. While every normal student of my age was out partying or socialising, (normally at thge expense of their parents!!)I couldn't afford the clothes to go out, let alone the nights/days out themselves. I would stay in every Fri & Sat (&every other) nite, with only the TV for company! Wot else could I do? Walk round in circles?!! I couldn't afford the TV licence so didn't have one, I was therefor to scared to answer the door & always kept my curtains closed. I well & truely struggled.
And if you ask how I afforded a TV, it was given to me by a friend whose family had bought & big screen TV.
#Oh yes the TV saved my life...#I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!:mad:0 -
but what are those on benefits supposed to do?
The local library will let you have books for free.
If you have a garden you could grow vegeteables in it which will also reduce your food bill.Walk round in circles?!!
Walking is good for exercise.
If you found a local riding school then it would be very productive to walk round in circles with horses with disabled children on.
There a LOADS of organisations which need volunteers to help them.
For example the local dogs home need dog walkers.
This would be good exercise for you as well as meeting people and gaining skills which might help you later in your career.
What about cleaning, babysitting, dog walking for people?
What about getting involved in local committees?
I sympathise with the financial situation you found/find yourself in but I think it's a great shame and highly unimaginitive if watching the TV is the only thing you can think of doing.0 -
-- True, but at some point you take up popular activities and unfortunately watching TV for at least the news is important. i assume you don't watch the TV at all?lisyloo wrote:The local library will let you have books for free.

If you found a local riding school then it would be very productive to walk round in circles with horses with disabled children on. - need to be vetted to do this and you need training in horse care otherwise you woudln't know what to do in an emergency, if a horse is out of control, obviously its up to management if they have time to train people to do this, and stables are mostly in the countryside, so an issue with paying for expensive public transport could be likely.

What about cleaning, babysitting, dog walking for people? *- You have to be vetted to do some of these; most often CRB checked and possibly interviewed. Have you even done any of these things yourself, i mean there is no way i would walk a dog and have to pick up their excrement, of course these things dont take up all of your time.
What about getting involved in local committees? - not quite sure in what capacity you are thinking of, these are sometimes subject to interview an again; in some instances CRB checked, depending on what kind of position you are doing.
I sympathise with the financial situation you found/find yourself in but I think it's a great shame and highly unimaginitive if watching the TV is the only thing you can think of doing.
And YES! i have tried to offer my services to a number of organisations through CVS which is the same as the year as the volunteer government campaign, but unfortunately most of them hadn't bothered or didn't want to interview/informal chat, nor did they even reply to messages left either through CVS or direct to the companies themselves. so please do not think that it is easy to find somewhere to offer your services. My Signature is MY OWN!!0 -
Like most things in this life we have put up and shut up. I was brought up to always pay my way and therefore the thought of not paying my tv licence would never enter my head. I just have to make cutbacks elsewhere, and if it got to the stage where I could not afford it then I would have to go without the tv. In answer to the OP question, I can't see how it would ever be workable that people on benefits got out of paying their tv licence. Although it seems to work with council tax and rent.
The problem would be that those that would not have to pay would increase the price for the rest of us and believe me I am not earning a fortune, but do have plenty of other bills to pay as well as a mortgage. A pay as you watch scheme would be a good idea but probably unenforceable.
I consider that for £11 per month it is pretty good value, although with the way things are going it wont be long before its £50 per month. For those that have mentioned scrapping the licence fee and have commercially run tv stations, who do you think pay for the commercials? The price goes on the goods we buy in the supermarket to cover the marketing and so we are all paying for that even if we don't have a tv at home.0 -

-it has to work for council tax and rent because people claiming would never be able to pay it. Of course home owners who rent out privately do not want people who are claiming DSS because councils only pay so much as these type of accommodation are very expensive, the owners wouldnt get all the money, thus they either consider reducing the rent, or the tennant has to cough up whatever the council will not pay, but seeing as it could be quite a sizable lump from their benefit, its better for them to get into social housing.

-No it will not go up because it will be scrapped one day, it is not a viable option as it is expensive and it's OPTIONAL please see the rest of my comments..

- i do not understand your comment, if you mean that supermarkets use whatever profit they make to advertise their company/food offers then yes, its THEIR profit it doesn't go anywhere else.

No, we do not have to PUT up and shut up, if we did we would get no-where and the government would steamroll over people.
Are you saying when television companies show documentaries like whistleblower, this is wrong?? Then there is something certainly wrong with you, if thats what you think.
The same applies when newspapers send undercover reporters into airport securities. when reporters go undercover into all sorts of dangerous situations so that we are informed as a nation into the realities of whatever that is reported on.
These are prime examples why people must not "PUT UP AND SHUT UP" as you call it.
Are you so sure that people should put up and shut up, no i dont think so.
Well fortunately if people do NOT watch LIVE TELEVISION BROADCASTS they do NOT need a tv licence; as there are many features such as watching DVD's playing Xbox playstation 2 etc as these are simply FEATURES of a Television set and is NOTHING to do with licensing.
Thus as long as tv owners do not watch LIVE TELEVISION BROADCASTS they do not need to buy a licence, but they must completely detune their set as Enforcment officers usually like to come and check, even if you write to TVL authorites telling them that you do not watch Live Television Broadcasts.
So i would invite you to please check your facts FIRST! There are plenty of websites detailing that what you do and DO NOT need a licence for!

I consider it very poor value as I never watch or listen to the BBC. I can get a phoneline with free weekened calls plus cable TV for £11 amonth which is what I call good value and I don't contribute towards your BBC viewing0 -

Of course no one needs to buy a license if they are using the set as a monitor for games consoles or DVDs. I didn't think this was the issue in this thread.
I like BBC television, I watch very little on other channels. For about £3 a week I see some amazing and entetaining stuff. Any of you been to America or Canada and watched TV? Takes about 3 hours to watch a film lasting 90 mins because there is an advert break every 15 minutes or so. Long live advert free TV even if it does cost £3 a week.0
