Can the milkman get a search warrant, and return with the police to forcibly enter my house and check the contents of my fridge? If so, then in future I shall be as wary of him as I am of TVL.
As far as I am aware I will never find myself jailed as a result of not paying my milk bill. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -

And whether anyone agrees with it or not, it has to be paid if you want a TV in the house regardless of anything else.
LOOK at the TV Licence website,
YOU DO NOT NEED A TV LICENCE IF YOU HAVE ONE OR TEN TVs IN YOUR HOUSE.
I wish people would just cheek there information before posting and giving people wrong information,
You can use a TV for playing games, as a computer monitor and for security cameras and so on.
You only need a TV Licence if you use a TV to receive broadcast programmes.

How many times are children told to watch a certain programme by their teachers. How can they do this without a tv. It is assumed that everyone has a tv. We went for three months without a tv and were hounded by tv licencing, they were worse than DCA's. You will have to pay a fine, you will go to court and all those threats. So we bought a tv and a licence to shut them up. A little later I bought another tv and the letters started again. I phoned them up and it was because the licence is in OH's name. ITS TIME IT WAS BANNED FOR GOOD.Barclaycard 3800

Name one what?
Are you saying the TVL do not have the power to apply for a search warrant? Or just that they rarely, if ever, do it? The latter is irrelevant. These are the powers they have, and they use them as leverage to harrass and initmidate people into compliance.
The TVL site has quite a lot to say about warrants, and it is summarised in the last 2 pages of this document on their site. http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/pdfs/40115_BBC_Freedom_of_Info.pdf
They cite s366 of the Communications Act 2003When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -

TVL go after soft touches, people who think they need a TV Licence just for reading the TV Times,
Yes they can go to the courts for a search warrant, BUT it will cost them to much money and if they don’t find a TV that is receiveing broadcast programmes it could end up costing them a lot of money , and just for the record TVL know that I have 2 TVs and have my name and address, and yes you got it, no I do not have a TV Licence.
But I did take one of the TVL officers to court for assault , he lost his job and got a fine.
Try looking for TV licensing .biz there it will tell you all you need to know about what TVL can and cant do.

I don't dispute any of that, but none of it is relevant to my original point.
TVL have far more powers than they ought to. Certainly they have more power than your average milkman. It should not be neccessary for people to find loopholes to avoid being threatened with search warrants and eventually even jail. The TVL should not have those options available to them in the first place. They are inappropriate, disproportionate and should have been repealed years ago. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -

In Spain the TV licence is non-existent, the equivalent of Council tax in my village is 80 euros a YEAR and the water rates 7 euros a year. Our car costs 45 euros a year to tax, and our scooter 7 euros.
This is how we can afford to live on my husband's (reduced) teachers' pension.
Getting back to UK TV licence, you have to have one if you can receive the TV channels, whether it be on a TV or a laptop.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

dmg24 wrote:The OP can evidently afford to pay for a computer and internet connection - is this an essential? It will certainly cost more than the TV License.
Sorry, minor me-being-picky moment, but that's a big assumption you're making there.
1) The OP may have purchased a computer a long time ago / received one as a gift and therefore the computer cost is not a factor. Some people are still on PAYG dial-up internet, again, just phone call prices (less than TV licence if you don't use it excessively)
2) There are other places to access the internet other than using your own computer in your own home - community centres, libraries, internet cafes, friends' houses etc etc.
