  • Not for the British people anyway
But for asylum seekers it seems it is (so say the government in their tenancy agreement, the one we're not supposed know about ) which says that the landlord has to supply a new (not less than ) 21" tv & tv licence for duration of their stay

They do it because tv is a fantastic way to condition and manipulate. If we all chucked out our tellies, how would they get at us all? You can ignore a letter, avoid the papers, have a conversation on the phone, but tv is a one way constant stream of information/advice/opinion pouring into your brain. That much STUFF has to have some kind of effect, even if only to add to our vocabulary - 'whatever!' Call me cynical, but I think the government know it's in their best interests to have everyone watching the box.

If I was an asylum seeker I'd keep it switched off and go and get to know my neighbours instead.

So, as far as the licence fee goes, I say get rid of the telly and enjoy the freedom!

Its called a "TV Licence" not a "BBC Licence".

And whether anyone agrees with it or not, it has to be paid if you want a TV in the house regardless of anything else.

I dont see why anyone on benefits should get it cheaper or free. The benefit system is there to help people out during difficult times....how does a TV fit into that?

Its no good sitting at home thinking "I dont see why I should have to pay it".....thats the way it is and all you can do is pay it....or sell your TV.

Don't forget your fridge too, that's not necessary in winter and you can't afford to put heating on, put on some extra jumpers.

ive just come off benefits (moved in with partner) i found that if i paid all my bills direct debit i knew exactly how much came out each week/month and also i didnt get any big bills like gas/elec .. i paid the phone tv licence and everything like that.. i did find the tv a necessity as it was sometimes the only time i heard another adult voice as i didnt go out..

I choose to have my child but i didnt think i would ever be single mum husband had different ideas.. so i struggled on what i had and sometimes went without..

I also wonder why the government has to give us child benefit because we have children.. again i chose to have my child.. ps this money comes off your benefits as its classed as earnings!!

we all know you will get caught eventually without a licence and end up in court and pay a fine and they wont take kindly to oh i cant pay, and you will still have to pay for a licence or get rid..
Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,

    Are thinking of you today.

The OP can evidently afford to pay for a computer and internet connection - is this an essential? It will certainly cost more than the TV License.

I still believe that if you can't afford something, then don't have it at all. But fir what luxuries you do have, prioritise what you really need, and only have those items.

I can't believe people compare having a TV to having a fridge! If your TV is as important as having fresh food then you really need to look at your priorities.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I don't really have anything more to add but just a warning that if you are caught you will have to go to court and will get a fine up to £1,000.

In July they seemed to have had a crackdown in my town and so many people got caught - the fines were about £160.

If you got this fine and you were on benefits they can apply to take it directly out of your benefit so you would be worse off each week anyway.

The Cash Easy Entry scheme is good although when you start it is about £5.00 per week and then once you are in advance for the next licence your payments drop to £2.50pw which is much more manageable.

In the 50s/60s and even the 70s people managed without a fridge, not many did not have a TV though, people went shopping more often for fresh food.We could do without many things that are not essential,it just depends what your priorities are,or what you, or other people think they should be.

I can remember having no video let alone a computer,no telephone,auto-washer,freezer,stereo system, dvd, mobile, toaster, microwave, electric light(no i am telling lies about the light!!)I could go on all day but the point i am trying to make is that a tv is not, in my humble opinion ,a luxury in this day and age.People do not NEED many things,i am surprised the government has not thought of this when setting benefit levels,or minimum wage levels ,keep doing posts like the one above and they may!!
