I am VERY concerned about this gas supply being reconnected. I wouldn't thought anyone would just dis-connect it for a laugh. When I had a guy round to do the gas safety thing he found a small problem, a leak, which to be honest he couldn't find with a detector. He only found it by a process of elimination. He needed a part so he had to dis-connect it. It is NOT ok for someone else to just pop round and reconnect it. How did the landlord do this BTW? If it was cut off they usually do more than just flip the switch to the off position!
I understand it can be worrying, scary even, but you've gotta be honest. You are doing the chasing around to get the landlord to do what they should've done like yesterday. What happens if, god forbid, something else major goes wrong? If the roof develops a leak are they going to tell you they can maybe afford to fix it next month?
Hi
You are right there is a leak in the kitchen roof from four different places at the moment and he said he would fix that when i moved into the house.
The gas board when they came out they put like a screw cap on the meter after removing the gas pipe to the house so that it couldnt let any gas into the property.
I understand I am doing all the running around but I just want some warmth in my home for my family thats all I want i may sound greedy but hey thats all i want
ThanksThanks

And also the block flooring in the lounge has started to come up as it has got so cold in here but thats another matter that can be dealt with when the heating is back onThanks

The gas was condemed by the gas emergency people they have said that it can be repaired, I am unable to give my notice as I am still in contract with the LL unless i can get out of it due to no hot water and heating
They would not condemn it - it is repairable you said so you landlord can get it repaired or at least get a gas safe engineer to see if it is economically repairable before going down the route of replacing it.
Is your landlord a gas safe engineer? if not he not exactly qualified to say whether there is a problem with the appliance or not. I would suggest you do not use the boiler and turn it off completely, was the whole supply to property turned off or just the boiler by the gas emergency service (not gas board) also what does the paper work you were left by the engineer say .........I will pm you

Hi lemontart,
No my LL is not a gas safe engineer, when I had the gas emergency people around they disconnected the pipe to the meter that goes through the house and turned the boiler of and put a hazard sign on the boiler and by the side of the gas meter, the engineer said that it can be repaired but when the boiler was installed that it wasn't correctly installed. (ie. the flute or something on it isn't long enough to realease carbon monoxide) Sorry not expert on gas and its not a toy to me to play with so its exacctly sure what wrong but what I was told in simple words that where the boiler is there is supposed to be a pipe 1/2 "" before the bend goes on it to go out of the property which it hasnt and was also told that the pipe going up the wall wasnt long enough it needs to go up past the roof of the house where it is now it by my kitchen window on groung floorThanks

You referred to your landlord as a 'friend for 13 years'. What sort of friend reconnects a gas supply that if used could potentially kill you and your family, leaves you without hot water or heating for an indeterminate period, (oh, and fails to fix 4 leaks in the roof for x months)? And I'll bet that your wiring is probably bodged up too...
Give him 7 days to remedy all the defects, if not say you will call in HSE and the gas emergency people. he will then face prosecution for reconnecting the supply.
It doesn't sound like boiler itself is condemned, it's just that the flue is inadequate-not a huge job to sort out.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yes I do have a live gas supply but when the gas board come out they disconnected the pipe from the gas meter then my landlord come out and reconnected it and told me that there isn't a gas leak and nothing to worry about
Course he did. Bye."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

So why are you being so laid back about this deathtrap of a house? You and your landlord seem to be two of a kind.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi macman
I understand what you are saying i really just dont know what to expect from the outcome to be if it all goes pear shaped, I am not getting the support from my wife as expected from all of this going on she wishes to keep the gas on to use the cooker but ive turned it back off
ThanksThanks

"You are right there is a leak in the kitchen roof from four different places at the moment and he said he would fix that when i moved into the house"
Hows that for a shot in the dark? I don't mean you to take this the wrong way but this is starting to strain credibility. So far we've got a QUALIFIED gas bloke from National Grid who came round and said that's not safe and put some kind of notice on it. Would that be the same notice I was vaguley thinking of saying something like it is an offence to put this back on? Then the landlord comes round and says no problem its fine.
There's also a leak in the roof which your post suggests has not been fixed. I would suggest the informal nature of the arrangement (ie there is a tenancy agreement but they're my friend) is clouding your judgement here. The gas person said that is not safe, and mentioned carbon monoxide AKA the silent killer.
You need to have a serious chat with your wife and view the rental as a business arrangement. At the moment you are dutifully doing your part and getting sod all, not even the basics in return.
Of course its not unreasonable to want some heating, but that's rather the point. Its perfectly reasonable to expect it to be repaired by someone QUALIFIED and SAFE, not someone who comes across like Jasper Carrot's character Wiggy.
