If you have a live gas supply, you should have a valid landlords gas safety certificate.

Demand one. If the existing faulty appliance has been condemned, disconnected or otherwise prevented from being used, it will not be included.

The LL will have to pay again for another valid certificate once he gets the faulty appliance repaired/replaced/reconnected.

But demand a landlords gas safety certificate. It's to protect you! It's your leagl right, and it's the LL's legal obligation to ensure one is in place.

  • They are also supposed to have some sort of energy efficiecy certificate but, bizarrly it cost £100 and the fine for not having one is only £200. So it isn't really useful as its not policed, and some landlords just don't bother. I'm just mentioning this in case it becomes a war of attrition which I'm hoping it won't!

Hope the links posted help to get things sorted, keep us posted.

    Hi Premier,

Yes I do have a live gas supply but when the gas board come out they disconnected the pipe from the gas meter then my landlord come out and reconnected it and told me that there isn't a gas leak and nothing to worry about
    Thanks

I would be tempted to give them a ring and explain that the landlord has reconnected the gas supply, something that is both illegal and dangerous.

I would be looking at your options for somewhere else to live as your landlord is heading for a lot of trouble.

Maybe the OP needs to have a word with the HSE?

    http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/index.htm

As an aside, isnt it an outrage that taxpayers cash is misused to upgrade private landlords assets via the warmfront scheme, a well meaning initiative which has been criminally abused by certain groups who can well afford to get their own heating systems.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Didn't you read the earlier post? The Warmfront money is being used to buy furniture for the LL's new house. He sounds like a complete w.....r to me.
  • Hi,

have contacted HSE near me and have suggested to ring the office near me tomorrow as i called i litlle late today as i have other things going on aswell.

I have spoke to my wife about all of this and i think she is getting concerened that it may get messy as our LL has been friends with me for over 13 years but as I have explained to her it is our and our sons safety at the end of the day and I told her that no one can disagree with me on that one.

I am a bit concerened that if things did get a bit messy what our options would be could we be avicted (we done have any rent arrears they are fully upto date as we have only been here two months) rent is due on the 23rd of this month
    Thanks

  • Regards eviction wait for more authoritative advice but my general feeling is it is not a quick process. Anyway you are not the one at fault here. Not paying the rent is a breach of the tenancy agreement but so is saying oh well I can't afford to get the heating system sorted.

I am VERY concerned about this gas supply being reconnected. I wouldn't thought anyone would just dis-connect it for a laugh. When I had a guy round to do the gas safety thing he found a small problem, a leak, which to be honest he couldn't find with a detector. He only found it by a process of elimination. He needed a part so he had to dis-connect it. It is NOT ok for someone else to just pop round and reconnect it. How did the landlord do this BTW? If it was cut off they usually do more than just flip the switch to the off position!

I understand it can be worrying, scary even, but you've gotta be honest. You are doing the chasing around to get the landlord to do what they should've done like yesterday. What happens if, god forbid, something else major goes wrong? If the roof develops a leak are they going to tell you they can maybe afford to fix it next month?
