Whenever I use my slow cooker I get a horrible smell, cant describe it but its not very nice, when daughter uses hers it smells of what she is cooking, people have asked what the funny smell is, happens every time I use it. I have been cooking on low, do you think it would make any difference cooking on high or auto, dh has now made me put it in the utility room when using it, its an Anthony M Thompson one by Breville, food tastes good but smell is a bit offputting

Just found this thread and reading through. I had exactly the same problem with the same slow cooker - the smell was revolting  and I wasn't convinced it got hot enough. Everyone else's slow cooker bubbled or boiled in some cases, but mine never did. I took mine back and changed it for the MR 6.5L - and I absolutely love it :)

Hello everyone - thanks for such a useful thread - just bought my first SC today, Cookworks 3.5 litre from Argos on offer at £9.99.
Don't really understand the 'concept' fully - to you have to immerse EVERYTHING in it in liquid of some kind or is it OK to have things sticking out?
Also, want to do Nigella's Coq Au Riesling in it tomorrow and read that all liquid must be hot/boiling - do I REALLY have to boil the Riesling before adding it? And again, as per my previous, do I have to completely cover ALL the ingredients in liquid - cos that's a LOT of wine hahaha!! Thanks for any help.

Hi sorry if this has been asked before.

From reading the threads, I am thinking of investing in a slow cooker. However, being the daughter of a fireman (and had life long fire safety instilled in me!), I am wary about leaving something cooking all day when the house is empty.

Is it ok to leave unattended or is it a risk?

For your first few attempts, try using it while you're still in the house. That way, you'll 'get a feel for how it cooks' and it will build your confidence in the slow cooker and in your recipes.

I've been using slow cookers since the early eighties and have never had a problem.

I've never heard of anybody else having one either, and I don't recall seeing any problems mentioned in any of the thousands of posts that we have on slow cookers.... The Complete Slow Cooker Collection

Does the liquid need to cover the meat? I've followed the recipe but think I used too much meat and it isn;t covered - I don;t want to burn the meat overnight, but I don;t want to drown it either!

  • If you leave the lid on tight it should trap in the moisture and be fine. I never cover my meat completely in the SC or else I end up with watery gravy. ;)

THanks! I thought so - I want a nice thick gravy, not a watery nonsense. Glad someone else is up late - I'm off to bed now.

  • Hi Guys,

I have a slowcooker quick question:

I chucked in a sausage and cannelini bean casserole last night (had left over sausage after making toad in the hole)

Its been cooking on medium overnight, and I switched it to low this morning, but I'm at my mum and dad's for tea tonight. (yes, I realise its going to cook for a stupidly long time!)

My question is this, if I turn it off this afternoon when I get in, can I use the slow cooker to heat it up through the day tomorrow for eating tomorrow night?

    Many thanks,

    PGxx
  • I am just about to jump on the slow cooker band wagon. Got my slow cooker reserved at Argos for me but I can't access the recipes via the site. Can any one post a couple of chicken recipes until I can get my hands on a cook book? Pretty please?
