Have just found a lid that will fit - SC is huuge!
Can anyone help with instruction please?0 -
Hi bigmuffins,
I have a very old Tower slow cooker (model 2917D) but I smashed the lid recently and I'm just using an upturned dinner plate as the lid at the moment.:o
I've long since lost the instructions so can't help with them but if you look in The Complete Slow Cooker index any of the recipes I've tried from there have worked really well in mine.

Hiya Pink!
:T Thanks for that info - have never used an SC before and this one is rather large!
Was going to use a dinner plate too but then tried the lid from an old pan (which I had kept as 'may be useful one day..' and it fits perfectly! :money:
Is glass too so can peek without taking it off!
Off to see what I can cook in SC now:j

Thanks bigpaws,
I think I'll go and have a poke around to see if I can find a pan lid that would fit. Don't forget that you don't have to fill it up......although it's good to be able to cook enough for two meals and freeze half.
Once you've used it a few times you'll love it....admittedly I tend to use mine more in winter than summer but it's great for bunging everything in in the morning and coming home to a ready made meal in the evening.
Does yours have the high, low, auto settings?
I tend to start it on high and then switch to low.....unless, as usual  , I'm rushing it, then I turn it down to auto. The newer slow cookers tend to cook things more quickly while the older ones really are slow, so if you're cooking something that is using quite a tough meat it will more than likely take a full eight hours.
Good luck! I hope you enjoy it!

My slow cooker (Frigidaire 5.5l) has started to lose water during cooking, even on a low setting, resulting in a burnt residue around the pot and a scarily small amount of liquid left in the pot by the time I get in from work. It didn't used to do this (have used it at least once a week since Christmas) but has done for the last month or so. It's not cracked, broken or bent at all but there is quite a large gap between the lid and the pot (which is too big for the water to form a seal). Any advice or should I just take the damn thing back?
Thanks for your advice, oh wise ones!
Hi Kat, I think you might have given up waiting for a reply, I looked but you hadn't had a direct response in the thread, I suspect your thermostat is going in your SC. Might be time to save up for a new one. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Yes it does! And a big brown round crockery dish.
Still can't decide on a recipe! So many to choose from! :rolleyes:0 -
Hi
Can anyone tell me how to cook a chicken in the slowcooker? How much liquid do I have to put in ? How long will it take?

Hi Cuddly,
I only ever put in enough water to cover the base of the slow cooker - probably half to 1 inch depth.
I put the chicken in first and then add the water afterwards.
My slow cooker book says immerse it fully in water but I have never done that with a chicken, but I do with a gammon.
I tend to cook the chicken for 5 hours on high.
The meat falls off the bone that way so there is no need to "carve" it. Probably not the best way if you have visitors over and presentation is key, though!
I have read elsewhere to cook for 3-4 hours but I tend to get a bit paranoid with chicken so cook for longer.
Good luck!

Hiya!
I just thought I'd let you know I ended up making Kheer (Indian Rice Pudding) in the slow cooker - family came round so needed a large pudding! Anyway I usually make it in a large saucepan on the stove but thought would try slow cooker as have to cook it for ages on lowest heat and stir frequently. Was perfect for slow cooker! And didn't have to stir as much either!
Very yummy and made loads (just as well as family eat like there is no tomorrow!)
In fact was so yummy they finished the lot and I had to make some more the following day! Easy with slow cooker though..
Will have to try a savoury recipe next - there is one I would like to adapt to slow cooker - yoghurt kadhi (or curry)
Has anyone on here tried it already by any chance?
cheers
