slow cooker quick questions thread

  • Thanks Mimijane. I guess my first mistake was using a crockpot recipe from *elsewhere* as I couldn't find a pork one on here which matched the ingredients I had in!

Sounds like I probably put in too much liquid, and I'll try putting the corn flour in later next time.

I did cut the veg up pretty small but obviously not small enough. Reading this thread has helped a lot as I'm starting to understand more about how the slow cooker actually works e.g. the amount of liquid that's actuall being retained!

I'm cooking goulash at the moment. The recipe calls for 2 hours at 180c in the oven (in a casserole dish), but I've decided to put it in the SC as I'm using braising steak and thought it might make it nicer :) (n.b. the original recipe is for braising steak too).

How long should I keep it in the SC for? On high/low? (Planning to eat around 6pm). I regularly cook braising steak in a curry in the SC but find that the meat just breaks up when it's finished cooking, and I'd like to keep the meat "together" in chunks this time - as I've gone to the trouble of frying it and everything ;)

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Just looked that up in my intruction book.

In my MR 3.5l that would take 5-7 hours on medium, which equates roughly to 7-9 hours on low or 2.5-5.5 on high

But I imagine that changes based on your capacity and stuff?

    Hope that helps a little?

Sure one of the SC Queens will be along with a better answer!

This is ideal for the slow cooker quick questions thread. I'll add it in there.

Anyone know any books for vegetarian dishes in the slow cooker? I have a veggie slow cooker recipe book, but it is American and relies quite heavily on tins of condensed soup, jars of tomato sauce etc which I'd rather avoid. Looking on Amazon, all the veggie books are American so may be similar? I'm happy to get a meat one if it has lots of veggie stuff in it!

    Many thanks, Ness.

http://crockpot.cdkitchen.com/recipes/cat/263/0.shtml have you had a look on there ness ? I find a lot of recipes online. Also with soups/tomato sauce requests can probably change these for something else.

My slow cooker (Frigidaire 5.5l) has started to lose water during cooking, even on a low setting, resulting in a burnt residue around the pot and a scarily small amount of liquid left in the pot by the time I get in from work. It didn't used to do this (have used it at least once a week since Christmas) but has done for the last month or so. It's not cracked, broken or bent at all but there is quite a large gap between the lid and the pot (which is too big for the water to form a seal). Any advice or should I just take the damn thing back?

Thanks for your advice, oh wise ones!
