I think the most obvious reply is a chilli,
but I have been known to make my nan's emergancy stew when it's cold and wet and I'm hungry.
1 tin stewed steak
1 tin mince and onion
2 tins veg
1 tin potatoes
1 tin meat soup (to bulk if needed)
makes 4 big bowls or 6 with the tin soup and bread and can take anything from 30 mins to just warm through to leaving it for 6 hours and dipping in when everyone gets in.
I rarely have it, but always make sure I have the tins with me to make it.One of the hardest of all life lessons is this:
Just because I feel bad doesn’t necessarily mean someone else is doing something wrong.
Just because I feel good doesn’t necessarily mean what I am doing is right.0 -
Hi, hope this is the right topic to post in - couldn't find anything in the complete slow cooker collection!
I usually just do beef stews in my SC, I thought this was me being boring and safe but having read the 'Using a Slow Cooker' topic, I'm now a bit more pleased with myself because I've never had any of the problems listed in there!
Anyway I think it's time to try something a little bit different (not too different yet :P) so I was thinking about doing some braising steaks leaving them whole (I've seen a nice looking recipe for this on the Hairy Bikers the other day, only they did theirs in the oven I think). I have some rump steaks that I've taken out of the freezer - I got them really cheap on the reduced section a while ago. I couldn't see them as they were wrapped up in a bag from the deli and put on the reduced section, so I've assumed they weren't the nicest steaks or they wouldn't be the ones left to be reduced, so was going to chop them up and do them in the slow cooker. Now I'm wondering if they would work the same as braising steak if I leave them whole? Or would I be best just not slow cooking them and doing them as steak and chips? (Still havn't looked at the quality of them yet as theyre still in their bag defrosting).0 -
Hi Liz,
I feel that rump steak is too nice (expensive) to slow cook and prefer to cook it quickly saving cheaper cuts for slow cooking. Saying that, it will slow cook well if you leave it for long enough to become tender. If you decide to slow cook it, just treat it as you would braising steak and cook it for quite a long time so it becomes tender.

Rump Steak
Rump steak in SC?

Thanks, I was sort of thinking that about using rump but it was really cheap from the reduced section. I think when it's defrosted enough to take out of it's bag without getting bits of bag stuck to it I'll have a look and if it looks like not the best steaks (which I'm guessing is why it was left at the end of the day) then I'll try it in the SC, and if it looks nice I'll fry it!
Where did you find that 'Rump Steak in the SC?' topic?! I thought I looked everywhere! Looked in the Complete Slow Cooker Collection and the Using a Slow Cooker - Techniques and Tips. :S0 -

See if you hover over the link Pink posted, you see the words "rump" and "steak" at the end of the link. This means Pink searched using those terms.
If you go to the top right of the OS forum and click search this forum, then advanced search. Put in the keywords Pink used in the top left - so rump steak in this occasion.
Check the box below is set to titles only. Click search now. You can also in the bottom right select the OS forum so it will only search Old Style
Ive possibly overcomplicated it, but give it a try, it's dead easy :jA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi I have just bought myself a large slow cooker and was wondering whats the best way to cook indivisual items in the same slow cooker seperately? like I stick a jacket potato in foil in there, seperate my veg and say cook a pork chop or pot of curry?
Am I better buying some mess tins or wrapping all in foil but this is impossible for cooking curry, also I may lose the joice from my meat.
Its so I can cook a meal for when I get home from work, Any help please

As far as i know, baked potatoes don't cook terribly well in the slow cooker
My thoughts would be a slow cooker isn't really designed for what you have in mind. They are more designed for one pot dishes - so you would cook your curry in there and have your baked potato cooked separately
we do have a thread on perfect baked potatoes you could make the night before and then reheat with your curry to save cooking that night
I think there are some slow cookers that have separate sections but if yours isn't designed like that I think you will find it difficult.
Of course, I don't know everything so would love for someone to come along and prove me wrong:p In fact, i really hope someone does!!!!!
there is a thread - whats in my slow cooker today which will give you a better idea of how people use theirs and what the cook in it
You can cook big joints of meat as well and don't lose juices that way, but I don't think it would be economical to run a slow cooker all day for a pork chop
hope that helps - ill merge this with slow cooker quick qs later

I have already done baked potatoes and tasted nice, sprayed with oil and put in foil cooked on low for 10 hours and were lovely.0 -
I sometimes use a small pyrex bowl inside the main slow cooker dish to separate food - I quite often do baked potatoes in foil & chilli or something in the bowl, loosely covered with foil. It's worked well for me so far.0
