Hi, I do jacket potatoes in foil in the slow cooker on top of a casserole or bolognaise or something. I also have cooked things in a separate bowl on top of what's in the bottom of the pot. Just experiment.

Just wondering,I bought my slowcooker and since I've never used it yet could anyone tell me how long it will take for a beef stew to cook.
It's a 3.5 ltre cooker and the quantities will be a stew made with 1lb of beef and the usual vegetables.
I just don't want my husband coming in and his meal not cooked :(.
    Thanks.

You can just pile everything into it on a morning or even lunchitme and just leave it.

Put hot water in it though. (and a couple of oxo cubes or some gravy granules

It'll be done to a turn.

    Enjoy................
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • was passing our local butchers today and noticed they were selling 6 good sized bones for £1. i picked these up in the hope i might be able to use a couple in slow cooker and freeze the rest. they have a bit of meat on but are they only suitable for dog chews?

ive never used the slow cooker tho so am hoping for ideas... have carrots, knorr stock pots, potatoes, cauliflower, sweet potatoes and frozen veg in...

    I would make stock!

this thread has ideas on basic stock as does this one . I would roast the bones first for 20or so minutes in a hot oven, then put then in the slow cooker with a boiling kettle of water. Chuck in a couple of onions cut in half, carrots the same, couple of bay leaves and about 10 peppercorns if you have them. Any veg - but cauliflower might be too strong if you know what i mean.

I would leave it for a few hours - maybe 4 on low then check back on it. When it's ready , strain it and use as you would normal stock.

Ill leave this to see if anyone has any other ideas, and merge it later on

PS - what kind of bones are they? What meat?

    Zip :)

  • thanks zip - great stock idea. had been hoping to make a meal. dont have a clue what meat it is tho - they are mix of long and short and round so maybe pork shins? the 6 bones weigh nearly 2kg!

  • i had a go with onions, leeks, carrots, potatoes, red lentils, garlic, herbs, stock etc and was quite nice although a little fatty. that seemed to be mainly down to one of the bones that was like a knee joint or something so i will avoid that!! it tasted mostly like lamb which is our favourite red meat :)
  • Saw them into slices so you can get the marrow out once it's cooked. Serve hot on toast with parsley.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
