AP flour has less protein than bread flour. Wheat gluten is protein so adding it to regular flour makes it more like bread flour. here, I can buy it in the grocery store. There are 2 brands I have used-- Bob's Red Mill and Arrowhead Mills brand. I find its easier just to buy the bread flour and not have to bother with with gluten. If I recall I think its 1 teaspoon gluten per cup of AP flour.

Yes, I'm well aware that plain flour makes a more "cakey" bread because of the lack of gluten - but around here until recently, strong bread flour was six times the price of plain (All Purpose) flour*. The price of the cheapest plain flour has been climbing fast lately - but it still might be worth the cost of buying gluten if it makes a better bread for me.

    * It always seems that in my local shops the cheaper brands of strong flour get whipped off the shelves long before I get anywhere near them. So only the expensive strong flours were available. My latest "find" is the first time for over a year.

So thanks for the info on how much I'd need to use - I think I'll give it a go and see what results I get and if the improvement is worth the cost.

    £plain + £gluten < £strong && (result > old) = WIN :)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I keep meaning to mention this on our thread....

The obsession with hoarding toilet rolls!!!

Correct me if I am wrong... But didn't that start with the rise in VAT? Because loo roll is VATable, we all got loads before the VAT rise came about... But it seems to have snowballed and become a commen topic on this thread!!!

I've always been a bit of a loo roll hoarder - I've a medical condition (without giving TMI) that would make running out very difficult as I can go through a roll a day at bad times:(.

However, I think it's also a throw back to school when we had the horrible tracing paper stuff ..... I have visions of running out and having to use newspaper (not that I ever have any of that so would be really stuck:huh:)

  • Rummer: I have just bought a folding steel shovel on eB*y and it cost just over a fiver. I also have bought really good waterproof trousers online at Sp*rts D*rect; they were £7. That website is amazing for winter bargains so have a look.

Weather is mental it's 14deg here already. Was roasting in house last night.

Folding shovel arrived yesterday; very chuffed. Had final blowout with freezer people./ After 3 failed delivery attempts on their part I cancelled my order and got money back along with £50 comp. I would avoid B*st B*y for electrics. Delivery service is appalling. Very dissappointed. So now I need to find an alternative shop for my freezer.

Still on hunt for cheapest cat food so cans tock up. My two furries only eat 'fish type' cat food. They are happy with own brand biscuits but really prefer Whisk*s to anything else. Luckily it has been the cheapest to buy so far but really need a deal so can stock up. Keeping eyes peeled.

Hope everyone is grand; welcome all newbies!

Frugal: "Well jel"* of your fur coat. I have a brand new pair of Mukluks that I got in Canada to slip onto my feet when weather turns. They are made form rabbit fur too. Sorry if I offend anyone who doesn't do fur.:A

When the weather is really bad I worry about not beingable to get to shop to top up my Gas and Electric.

So was delighted to discover BG are offering a gadget that lets me do this online, it just plugs into
    PC.

Mine arrived yesterday and it works a treat, was able to top up whilst looking out the window at pouring rain and feeling very smug .Unfortunately they only sent the electric one and I also need the Gas one. After an hour on the phone, dont ask, I gave up and will try again later inthe week

I AM from Viking decent and I still freakin hate the cold!!! I could cheerfully hop on a plane and disappear for 4 months over the winter period.

However.... Did I mention my new Rabbit Fur coat from ebay? < chuckles because i've been banging on about it on here! > I am quite looking forward to being able to wear it... Its wayyyyyyyy too warm atm... I think it would have to be pretty cold for me to be able to wear it as its roasty toasty!!! (and soft, and gorgeous and I LOVE it!!!)

Lol Ibought a fur coat.. not real but its massive comes down to my ankles i cannot wait to wear it :rotfl:
  • Ohhhh myyyyy, I'm exhausted & kitchen looks like a tip:( - decided I needed to shuffle stuff to make better use of cupboard space for winter stores.....

I have a big unit in the lounge with a double and single cupboard - single had juice in and double, cleaning products.

The juice has gone into a wee kitchen cupboard which did have winter stores in (and have a shelf free:) as they fit better due to the shelf height), cleaning stuff has gone into the vacated single cupboard (kitchen rolls now on top of unit - doesn't look great but at least I can see how many I've got and whether I need to get more) and stuff from 2 wee kitchen cupboards has gone into the double cupboard.

Still need to re-jiggle the other kitchen ones but ........ getting there:D
