Ohhhh myyyyyy, I am praying for a mild winter. If I didn't have to go out I'd happily be marooned in the house for weeks on end.

Journey to work was at least 2 hours each way last year (long difficult walk to bus stop through feet of snow, waiting up to an hour for a bus, horrendous journey then staggering across icey paths to get to the office) - instead of a 15 minute car journey.

I ended up losing up to 3 hours time a day which took months to make up (either that or lose pay:().

Also didn't make it to DM & DFs for Christmas Day (1st time ever) which was really hard.

So, being selfish too - I really hope it isn't.

Have a look at http://www.exactaweather.com/UK_Long_Range_Forecast.html for an idea (doesn't look great depending on where you are).

Another selfish one here, Ijust plainHate it, love to watch out of the window though to see neighbours kids enjoying themselves.

Frugal - How did you manage to get sucha bargain with your coat???? I have been searching the site and watching various jackets/coats and although they start at a really good bargain price in the last few moments of the auction tey rocket through the roof - one I was watching just now went from £23,00 to £50,00 in the last 45 seconds!!!!

I was extraordinarily lucky! The photo of the coat really didn't do it justice - it looked a weird shape with short sleeves so I emailed the seller and asked if it had short sleeves and how long was it - she is a similar height to me and it fitted her. Also, she had put "Collection only" on the main page which I think put people off, but further down the page she said that she was happy to post it but it would be £10 because of the weight of the coat... The auction started at 9.99 and only had 1 bid on it. So, I set an alarm on my phone to go off 10 mins before the auction finished... found that there was still only 1 bid on it!!!

I hoped that because nobody else had bid, that the original bidder didn't increase their bid... Which is exactly what happened :D ....30 seconds before the end of the auction... (this is the scary bit as ebay has signed me out at this crucial stage before and I lost the item)... I put in a bid that would be the maximum I would be prepared to pay and hit the BID NOW button.... and hey presto... It only bid up to £10.49!!!

Although I am very short of cash atm, I was prepared to pay more and as I got it for a ridiculous price I have decided to make a charity donation with the money I was prepared to pay for the coat.

I'd be surprised if another bargain quite that good came up but good luck and I hope that helps! Also, I would think that looking for a fur in the summer would get you a better price.

    The thread is quiet today...
  • This thread is almost as good as a day at the gymn, not just because of the speed at which it moves but also for the actual exercise it prompts me to do. I read through the posts, come across a good idea and I have to do it now before I forget.

So Sunday afternoon was spent running 12 or 15 times up and down stairs sourcing material, measuring and cutting, sewing, checking and adjusting, more sewing and checking and finally ironing.
Result; a full-length lining for the woolly bedspread that masquerades as a curtain over my front door (its actual purpose is to hide the nine hooks on which I hang bags, coats, the vacuum cleaner hose, carpet sweeper, extension lead and several carrier bags for my recycling) and a complete new curtain for the back door. Then a trip out to the garden shed for cup hooks (and bradawl and hammer, which are somewhere else) and a cane - not a cut-down bean pole; two tomato canes fastened together so that the length can be adjusted and also so that they can be used for their original pupose next summer.
I've made them all out of sheets and duvet covers that no longer fit in with my decor. They're thin, but I believe that it's not thickness that counts; it's the number of layers and the air spaces between that makes the insulation.
    Altogether a very satisfying day.
    Thank you.

bought some slippers for dd last night, found some flannelette sheets but just wiating for single size to come into stock. Just need slippers and a review of hats gloves and scarves.

Now I realy want some sheep skin slippers - I have found some for £40...now I keep dithering as this seems like so much money for slippers -however i get through a cheap pair a year and I reckon these would last me ages (have a sole like uggs so more substantial than normal slippers). Do I splashout??

THIS looks like a good buy for a pure wool coat plus the postage is cheap... and with only one bid on it and one hour to go, someone might be lucky! Size 10-12 but might fit small 14 says the seller...

Nope!!! Find a friend who is going to Majorca and ask them to go the the market - I got mine there for about 6euros :D They aren't Ugg type but have lasted me 4 years now and still going strong and I go outside in them sometimes!

There are lots of sheepskin slippers on Amazon from about £20. Well worth it - I splashed out last year and more than got my money's worth of warm and cosy.

  • If you are worried by the sea surge/storm prediction, then you may be able to glean something from
    http://www.weatheraction.com/

I must say that his predictions so far are absolutely spot on and we decided to not pre-book tickets because of the site last month, so saved the cost of the sub and more

    Afternoon all,
From the sunny Welsh Borders where it's currently 21 Degrees,Positively baking!
Reading the post about buying sheepskin slippers, I would say they are well worth the money I have had mine for three years and I love them.
If you have a Costco near you they had some there on the weekend they were hard soled and about £20
They also had some cracking lined gloves for £8...they were a bit like ski gloves.
Frugal:Congratulations on the coat.....Unfortunately I am a little on the fluffy side so would probably look like Chewbacca's twin if I bought one.;)
Even though we don't get that much snow here, due to being in a Valley I still love the preparation of winter and love this thread.
This is probably my favourite here on MSE as everyone is so friendly.
