Preparing for winter II

This looks good thank you. Our hallway is only door-width so I am hoping to use one of those extendable shower curtain poles that just pushes against the walls. I guess with something like that I could get some heavy fabric or a blanket and folder the top over and slip it on the pole? Bit of that sticky iron on stuff and a couple of stiches for good measure?
Could be worth a try, but I think that a decent fabric that would keep the cold out might be too much for a shower rod. I don't know what your set-up is, but if you can fit a proper pole I would, and I agree with an earlier poster who said that dowelling from the local DIY store is cheaper than a curtain pole, and is very nice.
If you fold the top over & slip it on the pole, it won't push out of the way for opening the door very well. That technique is fine with fine fabric, or if you don't want to pull the curtain back.
But I think for a good thick door curtain/blanket you'll have to sew on a few rings or make fabric tabs!0 -

Our Lidl has them this week - fluffy angora - look really nice!

Another few things scored off the list today - I have ordered car shovels (they fold in half) and also a large snow pusher thing, along with a sack of salt. When at Tesco got another £2 of savings stamps for my savings card, which will be used to buy groceries at the end of October - slow but sure!
Oh where did you get them from, I want one for the car!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Petitions have been done year in, year out for as long as I can recall. Even the farmers say it's not been necessary for a very long time. I really don't know what it takes to make our so-called leaders to see sense, I think it's just one of those things they put aside til manana..and we all know tomorrow never comes. But if you want to start your own petition oldtractor, I'm right up there at the front with my pen
Think Im pretty much in the minority here but Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont all shout at me at once.... but i love the thought of the clocks going back !! Halloween is my favourite time of year.. Halloween, Bonfire Nite then Christmas, Love the nights where the curtains are closed and watch the Tv together, Sorry guys roll on the clocks going back. xxx:j:j:j0 -
Another extreme ruraller here.
I live in the back of beyond and we get cut off, guaranteed, every winter, sometimes for weeks at a time. The nearest (five mile away) small shop often runs out of stock and even in summer (tourists can strip the shelves bare in half a morning flat!) so it makes sense to stock up when I can and make provision for not being able to get to shop/anywhere.
On a personal note I am kinda celebrating..well nearly...tomorrow I will hear from the head of the Scottish Fuels office if they will allow me to pay my heating oil by installments. This is a long term issue for me, as they previously wouldn't, as their policy says no tenants can do this. If they allow this it means we will have heating this winter. When temperatures got to minus 24 last year and this year is expected to be the same, if not worse, that's a huge issue. Fingers crossed.
Hey Red Doe
I'll keep mine crossed too, hope you get sum good news xxxx0 -

I'm not wildly keen on winter, especially January, but I'll admit that I do love autumn. There's something kind of cosy about knowing my little part of the planet has knocked itself out for months and so is winding down for a bit to recharge until it begins the whole process again in the spring.
I feel a bit guilty though about entertaining such snuggly thoughts as long as I know Red Doe could still be looking at that -24 winter (I realise there are others like her, but she's one of our own on the forum and it niggles away at your conscience more once it's got that 'personal'). Every time I've spotted that this thread has risen to the top today I've leapt on it in the hope that it's in response to some good news from her. Fingers still very much crossed here.Freddie Starr Ate My Signature

You're not in the minority, I love Autumn colours.
I'm not so sure about the short days, I used to work in a place with no windows, I went in the dark came home in the dark I'm sure it was bad for me.
But I love the lead up to Christmas and decorations.0 -
Making progress on my winter prep this week. Tuesday I ordered a new jacket and long coat from Land's End. Items were already on clearance about 65% off and then there was another 25% off coupon on their website and free shipping as well. I ended up only paying about 45 quid for 2 gorgeous coats. I have 2 lovely coats already, but have lost a good amount of weight lately (about 3 stone) so the one's I have been wearing are huge on me now. I will pass them on to my DSIL.
Stopped at the grocery store on my way home from work yesterday and brought home 3 whole turkey breasts on sale for $.99/lb. They averaged about 7-8 lbs (3.5 kg) each. About 4.5 quid each bird I think. 2 went straight into the deep freezer and I have one to roast this weekend. I hope to get to another store tomorrow and pick up 3 beef chuck roasts. They make excellent pot roast or can even be minced in the food processor.
Yesterday OH had a cord of wood delivered. Our old woodman has cancer, so this is the first time we have bought wood from this company. Most of the wood was good quality seasoned hard maple, but there was some that was not the best. Of course they delivered it in a "dump" truck, pulled up by the garage and dropped the whole load in a pile. By the time OH had sorted and stacked it all, and discovered the pieces of poorer quality the delivery guys were long gone. Won't order from them again! The wood cost $75/cord (about 45 quid). Oh well, at least we are only going to burn it!
