The Vulcan's been confirmed as going - worth going just to see that, it's the most fantastic aircraft and very beautiful (was at East Fortune a couple of years ago).Hobsons_Choice wrote: »We also have to buy badger food (+ doing occasional peanut butter sarnies and peanuts) for Billy (might be Barbara) the badger who visits every night.

sorry I have to ask. why were you not allowed curtains?? did he want to peep on you?
Thats a bit chuffing unreasonable of him tbh. was it that he just didnt want them up or just didnt want YOU to put them up?
Haha, sorry that's made me chuckle. We were a first floor flat with no neighbours so no chance of us having problems with a peeping tom. When we moved in the flat had just been re-done, new plaster, the works, so I imagine he was reluctant to have us causing damage to the new plaster-work by fitting curtain poles. The landlord lived over 400 miles away, so it wasn't something he could do easily and something the letting agent wasn't remotely interested in! Such is life. Either way the fleece blankets worked an absolute treat during the Cumbrian winter.

Thinking ahead...
1)Next week I'm going to have a good sort through and clear out of the freezer and larder, to use up all the stuff that's about to go out of code or (in the case of the freezer) is looking a bit dodgy. That will free up most of next weeks (and perhaps the following weeks) food budget, to stock up on more useful food for the winter.
2)I hadn't started thinking about bird food yet this year but I'm going to now i've been reminded. I usually harvest the seeds from the garden sunflowers, plus if I've got any suet or cheap dried fruit in the larder that needs using soon I'll earmark it for making fat balls. I'll need to remember to save some small yoghurt pots for this too. Plus I'll dry off some of the windfalls for the birds...I cut apples into thick slices, core them and dry them in the oven when I'm making rice pud or meringues. I make apple rings for us to eat too of course but the birds get the scruffy ones, hung up on a string. And I'll make a couple of bird feeders from milk bottles for the seeds. The commercial ones tend to scatter the seeds on the ground and attract rats.
3) I need to check the hat and glove situation, and get knitting replacements if required!Val.0 -
Blowing a gale and raining here, but have just got in from a long walk. My preparing for winter now includes getting fitter and getting more outdoor exercise to chase the winter blues away.0

The Vulcan is now 'living' just 1/4 mile away from our house! We look forward to seeing it take off and land for the airshows over the summer. Fantastic sight!!
I've been lurking on this thread for a week or so with nothing to report but now we're well on with fitting our new woodburning stove and about to sign up for solar panels so we're hoping to get through the winter without bothering EDF too much!
Went to Primarni and got everyone new PJ's etc last weekend - gonna be colder upstairs without the CH on. We were snowed in for nearly a week last year so I'm stocking up a bit and we've been making paper logs and firelighters in the hope that they'll be dry in time to burn later in the winter. Just need to sort out a draught excluder and a curtain for the front door!
Feeling very stormy here today but not cold at least!

Ooh, exciting. I'm waiting on a price for having one put in. Fingers crossed that it's affordable. Mind you if it is there is then the decision of which one to get and how we want the finish of the hole in the wall to be

I seen the Vulcan last year, very impressive. Last year was my first airshow si im gutted that they decided to close the airbase. Its the 100th anniversarry this year aswell. The LO loves planes atm so im hoping we can still go. Such a shame that the red arrows are ground albeit very understandable
Awwww, that's lovely:)0 -
OMG! The wind & rain have been dreadful.
I've bought another airer from Dunelm today. It's got wings & loads of drying space.
Hopefully I won't need to use my tumble drier now.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
Catching up on a few things I've read over the past few pages .. I'm not technical to quote lots of people !
Money in house - I keep a small amount of money in the house, for emergency local shop shopping. There is a cashpoint in the local shop that charges £1.75 a time to take money out and last winter it broke down quite frequently. I don't want to be charged for taking my money out of the bank and I don't like the idea of having no money at home. I keep/have kept money is random places an example being in a paracetemol box (there's no money in there at the mo!). No burglar would think of looking in there and when I was burgled last year they looked in the cash box which had an assortment of allen keys in it but no cash. The stash I had was safe.
feeding birds - like everything else I stockpile this when its on offer. I feed the birds all year round but put out a lot less in the summer as there's only a couple of birds that visit. Over the past week I have been putting out more and it has been eaten. I like the idea of the milk bottle feeder aa few pages back which I will probably make as it will keep the seed dry as well.
Stocking up - I haven't been stocking up at all this week - not even loo rolls ! I have a list of things to buy but really there's not a lot left to get for the cupboard. I need chocolate but if I buy it I will eat it, I even put back a tin of roses in tesco yesterday. It took a lot of will power though!!
The weather has been horrible I'm glad I bought some wellies!0 -
I have to open the 'cupboard of doom' under the stairs tomorrow for the carpet cleaner ..god only knows what he's going to think when he see's my stockpile
Debating wether to shift some to the bedroom tonight
Any recommendations for welly socks? Do I go cheap and cheerful or pay a bit more for decent ones?
I'm over the field everyday now walking the doglet and I hate chilly feet
