Preparing for winter II

The weather today has been awful, it was dark when I got home from work at 8pm! It's far too early for that too be happening so to cheer myself up I had homemade, pre-frozen, portioned up soup for dinner. Me? Old Style? Oh yes!Hon, I'm sure there are a few of us as well as myself that can identify with the awkwardness of telling others about splitting up, hope it goes as well as it can for you. Take good care of yourself.
Thanks, I think it's going to be tomorrow or Thursday evening that it's happening, as I wanted to get my parents on their own (without my siblings there) and explain what's happening, as there is no animosity between me and my ex, we've just fallen out of love and become friends. I did miss him in the last series of Larkrise - Robert Timmins in a sweaty workshirt (drool). Oh, I'm coming over all unnecessary!
Obviously he was filming Downton Abbey at the time - can't wait for it to come back.0 -
Lizzyb1812 - thanks for the info about surgical spirits, all I need now is to stay awake long enough to do it!!! I'd swear that my SAD is kicking in already
but on a brighter note am well ahead with winter prep

Wouldn't these be absolutely horrid if you had to go to the loo in the night, having to strip your top off to get the bottoms down...? Makes me shiver just thinking about .
Actually hadn't thought about that lol. I think i'm that determined to buy on cos Dh is soooo against them but may have a rethink. My mums bought me 2 lovely pairs of fleecy bottoms from Primani for my birthday so along with all my old ones I should be fine.
Things done
Stash of hot chocolate bought and hidden
Flannelette sheet ready to be picked up from Mr T's
Food storage place emptied and ready for filling with bargains/bogofs
Wellies and welly socks ordered/bought
Plain black gloves bought from primark for both adults and kids
To be done this week
Buy wool to finish blanket and enough to make a nice chunky scarf
Stock up on candles/matches/torch
Try to make some draught excludersMarch 2014 Grocery challenge £250.000 -
Am back in my home town at the moment visiting family. This place is much better for homeware discount shops than Manchester is. I couldn't find any curtains in the charity shops so went to the discount stores to see what I could dig out and they did not disappoint. Got a sewing machine for £40 from QD (auntie paid for this). A new discount shop in the old woolies store came up trumps as they not only sell those draft excluders for £1.99 but also had thermal door curtains £9.99 each. I bought 2 of these, one for the front door and one for the back. Am back home tomorrow so will fit them then with the aid of Velcro.0

My DH complains about the cold, but is quite happy for the back door to be open all night for the cat to come and go as he pleases. It's definitely much colder than it has been, so as much as I love our cat I'm perfectly happy for him to be put outside at night - he has a place he can sleep.0 -
I've made the rosehip syrup! It is sooo lovely! I can't believe I haven't done this before, and so easy to make. Only made 1/5 of the recipe, but plenty more on the bush, so will leave for a few more weeks (guessing the softer ones are better?) and do some more (and also keep a good look out for any more bushes around here!). I hope I can make some every year
Can't wait for DD to try it tomorrow, hope she likes it (DH won't even taste it, he can't believe I'm even considering picking random berries and 'eating' them (rolling eyes!)
Thank you so so much for the recipe (and idea) :T and what can I do next that is so cheap, easy and nutrious?0 -
Kazla - there is a thread for making your own yogurt just using a flask, a couple of spoonful live yogurt (freeze what you dont use) skimmed uht milk, sweetener and powdered milk, that with some rosehip syrup, sounds good- also with all the ingredient being dried/longlife and the live yogurt frozen great if you can't get out in the bad weather.
a lot of people have started making blackberry/bramble jelly, not quite ready here yet tho' easy enough and no additives and colourings - blackberries, sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice- buy the bigger 2kg packs of sugar at T's as it works out an awful lot cheaper. Semolina and a spoonful of jam - yum!skintbint x
