Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr really chilly again this evening but the day itself was glorious.
My fleece lined combats from Ebay came today and really pleased with them for the £9 I paid for them. They do come up quite small so cant gain anyway between now and full on winter!!!
Got loads of apples from my uncles tree so going to make my Christmas mincemeat at the weekend, now Septembers here it will be the C word :xmassmile before we know it!!Debt at LBM [strike]£17,544[/strike] £5700:TOver £14,000 PAID OFF :T

evening all,
cant remember who posted about the christmas cake - there are so many posts to catch up on but a little tip - fold newspaper lengthways and wrap around the outside of the tin a couple of inches higher than the side of the tin and tie with string and this stops the top burning to a crisp before the middle is cooked through.skintbint x

It's ages since I posted on here, and I've just been trying to catch up. I have a quick question......does anyone know where I can get kingsize flanelette sheets for a deep mattress? Most places like John Lewis only do them for normal mattresses but ours has a memory foam topper so I need deep ones. Any suugestions gratefully received!!
Thanks x0 -

rosieben I agree with you about the chilly gap at the back of a slanket. Someone gave my then 89 y/o Mum one last year and she tripped on it twice, she was okay thank goodness but it could have been a lot worse. My dog now has it as his blanket and Mum stays safe in her jimmies, warm dressing gown and bootie slippers.
Speaking of bootie slippers, please be cautious about giving the one slipper for both feet type as a gift. Having worked with older people for some 30 years I know they can forget how something new 'works', and if they try to stand and walk in them it could be disastrous.
Sorry to put a damper on what are basically good ideas but it's as important, in fact more so, to make sure our older family stays warm and safe at the same time.0 -
Thanks for the link Rain-Days but bum, bum, bum. I've jsut had a lightbulb moment - November isn't that far away and I have sooo much still to do!!
Better get a shift on then cos curtains don't make themselves

Aligurdie, I remember my husbands auntie used to hang two pairs of curtains at the same window, one behind the other, shorter ones behind, longer ones at the front. She was very thrifty and said that it kept the cold air out so maybe you could try that if you have some old curtains in the loft or somewhere. She used to use the little plastic curtain hooks to attach the second pair to the heading tape of the front pair. Its quite easy to do, but a bit less easy to explain lol.
Another thing to remember is that roman blinds take much less fabric than curtains so maybe you could re-use some fabric you already have, from old sheets or curtains maybe. You could interline it with some old fabric to make it thicker and even if you didnt like the fabric it wouldnt show as it would be sandwiched inbetween.
We have a flat roofed extension to the dining room coupled with large french windows so I am looking at perhaps some kind of window quilt to hang over the glass. We could put it up at night when we come back in from work and wouldnt need to go out again but it would be a bit of a faff! Then again if it makes the kitchen more comfortable it might be worth it.
Thank you ever so much for your reply, took me a while to find it as this thread moves so quickly!
I'm such a muppet that I never even thought to have a look at my old curtains. So much going on at the moment that I can't think straight, but I shall have a look tomorrow. I'm sure I'll have something which I can use.
Has anyone seen any cheap fleeces about? Not bothered with colours, everytime log on here the thread has moved forward so much - I'm sure I'm missing out on all the tips!96 items decluttered so far in 20130 -

I had the same problem with my snuggie.
Solution...?
A one inch (2.5cm) strip of velcro applied at the point where the snuggie meets in the small of my back.
There's enough grip to stop it from flapping open (and possibly tripping me up) yet not too much to lock solid and restrict my movement. So rather than restraining me (or tearing a button hole or ties, for example) it just pops free.

I've been sitting here all smug because I thought I'd finished with the warm stuff. What I have actually finished is buying it! I've just realised that I've got all the sorting to do. I know coats and jumpers, fleeces etc are washed and ready, but they aren't in the wardrobes - they are in the loft.
Big sort out to come now, removing summery stuff and changing over to autumn/winter stuff, if I have any that fits!
Going out to a country fair on Saturday, and will need to do more bottling on Sunday (and h****work) so it looks as though next weekend will be the time.
Can you block off any cold weather until then please.0 -
