Just been looking for warm bedding and saw the tesco website has velvet bed throws from £40 to £10. They look quite thick.

    The link is:
    http://direct.tesco.com/product/images/?R=208-0564

I won't be ordering as they are dark colours and my white cat like to lie on my bed. . .

Unfortunately they dont have the teal one on offer :( its still £40! Black wont go in my chocolate and teal room.

Hi Kathy i love the idea of fleece lined trousers they sound so snuggly. My mum moved to USA a while back and has sent some of these over before for the kids but i thought they were just for the little ones not us grown ups. Thanks for sharing your winter bits with us

My son has a few pairs of lined trousers. My mum sent them so they were probably from Matalan.
  • Hello all

Can I join in with the preparation for Winter 2011. We had a really bad winter last year and was totally unprepared for it (even though with live in sunny Scotland :)).

Planning on going shopping tomorrow for fleece pj's for DS and myself. Going to Primark as love the fleece pj's that they sell for the kids and plan on getting an all in one for myself. Also planning on getting some flannelette sheets as noticed that John Lewis have them on offer online but can't get a single bed size as OOS!

Enough of my rambling! Still need to make a list of everything that we will need to see us through the winter and get cracking with the shopping.
    MFW - currently at £23,610 (Aug 2014) MFD 2020

There have been strict guidelines about safety with childrens nightwear since I was young. Many years ago now ;)

Yep I take it back, good old google! :D The rules came into place in 2008 and the clothing still needs to be labelled Keep away from fire.

Also googled Fleece lined trousers and theres several mens pairs on Ebay for about £12

Good old Sports direct have some too, ladies and gents.

I'll endorse the Craghoppers link. I lived in these during the worst of last winter and will buy another pair this year. They are fairly pricey but worth it as I've a normal 30 mins walk to work that doubled during the worst of last winters weather and I still arrived warm and dry. The Peter Storm brand has a similar trouser but not quite as thick - last October time they were 'buy one 2nd half price' . Not stylish ( unless cargo pants are still in) but worth every penny for the warmth. Forgot to say wash and dried easily too
  • ive arranged with the builder for him to start work in october on the stuff i need doing round the house, the only real bit of winter prep that he is having to do is a bit of re-pointing on certain parts of the house. cant afford to have it all done, so just getting a couple of really bad areas done just now and then the rest in the next couple of years. im also getting my drive done as i can only park 1 car on the drive at the moment but parking round here is terrible so im going to get it made bigger in order to get 3 cars on it. will mean i wont have any front garden but thats ok with me as have a decent sized back garden so that makes up for it.

got the plumber out next week to service the boiler and am dreading it, think he might be telling me i need a new one after i got my bill for 48 days gas usage but again i cant afford that right now so it will be next year before its done. im actually starting to regret doing the hat trick in a year as marriage, house and a baby all within 10 months of each other is starting to  at the combined cost of it all.

buy wind up torch/phone charger - not escential really
curtains for bathroom windows? - not sure, will discuss with mum when she is up
sort out car kit (de-icer, washer fluid, phone, charger, blanket, shovel & brush)
get gas fire safety checked - being done this week
tomato soup (i go through buckets of the stuff)
uht milk - buy in bulk from costco, but only had stuff dated dec 11 so will wait another month or 2
    diluting juice
    rice

extras that ive thought of after reading more of other peoples prep
    more cat litter
    de-icer in bulk
    screenwash in bulk
    • Bottled water - our water kept cutting off last year

Ours goes off fairly regularly (all times of the year):(.

I keep 1/2 a dozen (empty and rinsed) pop bottles filled with tap water in the bathrooms to use in the toilets in an emergency - saves having to use precious (and expensive) bought bottled water for the necessities!

I do empty and refill every so often so the water's not lying around too long since I read about the risk of Legionella in car windscreen washer water which I thought may be similar:eek:.
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

Or too many people have been reading this thread and beat him to it

Well, we live in a holiday town so I'm just hoping that's why no-ones had any in. Otherwise I'm going to be panicking:eek:
    Next few jobs are:

Phone chimney sweep- got a number of a cheaper one.

Visit Dunelm and rummage through their reduced shelf to find curtains that will go over my front door and windows. Have gorgeous ones up there at the moment that only cost £10. However, as we never shut our curtains in the summer and they only had this one pair in that were perfect for our colour scheme reduced it didn't matter that they were a few inches short on the width. Of course, it matters now if I'm going to be properly prepared:o

Thermal linings for our patio door curtains.

    Sort out kitchen cupboards.

I think we have them over here as well, I have a pair of Craghoppers I use to do the horses in wet weather, I think that brand also do winter fleece lined versions.

    http://www.craghoppers.com/buy/kiwi-stretch-winter-lined-trousers-long-length-164754

Thanks for that. I've ordered a pair, just hoping they fit. (I never trust the measurements clothing companies put online.)

    Hi guys,

Just back from tesco there and they were selling 2kg bags of Finish dishwasher salt for 35p. Had quite alot of stock so think l now have plenty of salt for the path and driveway. thanks for the tip everyone for the dishwasher salt otherwise i would never have looked. xx

Drat! Went to Lidl and looked for dishwasher salt there but couldn't find any. Then went across to Tesco to pick up some other bits and didn't think to look there for the salt. Doh! :rotfl:
